Hello. I am a JEC member (100764). I am stopping in France with a guy who has 4.2 XK8. He is trying to register it in France. He cannot find the VIN plate (not the one in windscreen). He has to take a picture of the VIN plate for French registration but cannot find it. Any ideas ?
Thanks Keith Ash..

Hi Keith
You will likely find the VIN number in a few locations.
1. Bottom right hand side of windscreen.
2. On the manufacturers plate (sticker) affixed to the B post.
3. There may also be a sticker near the battery area in the boot.
4. The car’s ECU also stores the VIN so a code reader would have to be used to extract it.
I note in your question that there is some doubt as to the provenance of the VIN being in the bottom right hand side of the windscreen. This would normally be the go to place for most folk. I wonder has something happened to the car to compromise this?
I hope the info helps

Re: XK8 registration in France.
Hi again. I have seen the car today. It is a 2002 XK8. It was bought from BCA in Blackbushe. BX52 RPO.
The car needs a COC to proceed with his French reg. Purchased by owner 12/11/2014.
B Post sticker has been removed. See pics. Don't know why. Nevertheless - this car needs another life here in France.
I don't think the car is 'nicked'.
Is there any way he could replace the sticker .. or get a copy of it's heritage ? Or, indeed get a Heritage Certificare ?? Sorry- I am only used to old Jags.

I think the most indelible copy of the VIN is machined directly into the structure of the car immediately to the righthand side of the battery, just under the edge of the trim panel

Great answer from Astromorg as always.
The fact the VIN is missing in two usual places does seem very unusual and for me starts to ring some alarm bells. Asides from the possibility someone has tried to remove the car’s identity at some point in its life is it possible that it was in an accident- with the front end of one car being stuck to the rear end of another ?
