Some tips on replacing fuel pump on 1995 XJS 4.0 Coupe – Part 5
34) Now that the fuel pipes are in place tighten the fuel filler connections, fit the right angled bracket and angled breather pipe connector between tank and filler neck. I left the car raised so I could easily check for leaks.
Angled breather pipe, right angle bracket is behind.
35) At this point the fuel system is de-pressurised and empty so I took the opportunity to fit a new fuel filter – the one located at the rear of the LHS front wheel arch - because it was easy to do.
36) And once that is done the rest really is quite straight forward. I re-assembled the minimum I needed to test the system for leaks i.e. electrics, fuel pump relay, loosely locating hockey stick, battery tray and battery. I found I needed about 20 litres of fuel in the tank for the system to prime so I could start the car. Having made sure the car started and there were no leaks I then lowered the car and removed the battery and tray to ease fitting of the tank carpet.
37) Assuming all is good and there are no leaks time for a cup of tea and chocolate digestive
38) Final re-assembly. I mentioned that I had separated the plastic clips that hang the tank cover from the front edge of the boot aperture so I had to rivet these back in place. Not concours but looks ok. There are foam plastic blocks that were stuck to the front of the hockey sticks to help keep the side carpet in place. These had fallen off so I used Velcro to put them back. Getting the wiring loom back in place and fixing with the cable ties is a bit fiddly and refer to the pictures you took earlier so you don’t stand there wondering where those unused electrical connectors should go.
39) I did this job over two weekends because I am slow and methodical and I decided not to buy the replacement parts until I was certain what I needed. I also spent several hours working out how to do things but I think if I were to do it again a couple of days would be sufficient.
40) I hope this is useful.

That’s the way to do it!
Well done Chris, all a great help.
I actually drained my tank 2 years ago and de-vapoured it also.
Pipes were a breeze without the fear of fuel.
Thanks again.
