Postby FGARDEN » Fri Apr 11, 2025 8:08 pm

Just got a Quote for my 1989 jaguar XJS full body respray. £7000
Is this a normal quote for this job?

Hi F. Garden, cost of a full respray has a significant number of variable factors to consider so there is not a lot can be contributed from a community that has no knowledge of the car, its condition, the location or any other consideration. Why don't you get quotations from other body shops in your area as a comparison on a like for like basis.

I will be very interested in any replies to this, as I am aiming to get my car re-sprayed later in the year.
As Jim said, there could be a few variables and some quotes could possibly start from £3000 up to £9000, depending on the work involved.
With my car, I would prefer it to be less than £7000 quoted for your car, as mine is a semi-bare shell with just mostly the outer panels to prep and paint.
I have already prepped the bumper covers, under panels and engine bay etc.
I am hoping that by doing some prep work myself it might reduce some of the costs, but I do realise that a good bodyshop would probably prefer doing it their own way, with their preferred products so they can guarantee the work.
Any guesstimates welcome,thanks.
Good luck with your quotes.

F. Garden / Nick,

As you will appreciate, the cost of a full respray will vary significantly based on the amount of preparation, remedial activity and any post-paint fitout is required.

As a guideline, why not ring Keith Parrington at https://www.paintingclassiccars.co.uk/ for a chat? Keith was the technical advisor for Jaguar XJ models for the club for many years, and has painted many well-known XJs and XJS's He has done work on my car and those of other JEC members.

Cheers

Thanks for that Paul....that name and company noted.
I am also going to obtain more info from Karl at Premier Paintwork in Newbury (50 minutes drive from me). If you recall, his company were the guys that did Daren's fantastic flamenco red XJS....so they know what they are doing.
My problem is to get the timing right. Some companies have a 5-6 month waiting time. I didn't want a freshly painted car for it to sit in the garage for a long time, while I get around to the suspension and engine rebuild...it’s just taking a very long time. Sort of having a hunch that a respray quote might be from £4000+ .
I really need someone experienced, who can apply original factory painted-on coach lines, but I do have the Jaguar stencil tape already and their colour codes.
Yes...fact finding at the moment.
Thanks for the pointers.

20 years or so ago when you took a classic car for a repaint the average opening gambit was £4,500, my total bill back then ended at £20k.... but that was with chrome, replacement this, replacement that. Move forward 20 years and Harry Metcalf's XJC repaint was initially quoted at £7,500, I think that portion of his resto ended up at over £30k. Even my mates Cobra (GRP) when for a repaint, they quoted him 6k, issues with the gel coat and cracks in several places resulted in a final bill closer 10K. Go in to this with your eyes open.
