Original headlights

Postby KrisGrim » Sat Mar 16, 2024 8:24 am

Hi,

I have failed in trying to find out what type of headlights were original on the Mk2/340 and need your help.

Currently I have a Lucas H4 e2, just one, as the other was smashed by an engine hoist  Finding another to match has been impossible, especially as it has no pilot hole.

I do not think the one I have is original, I think the original would have used a 404 large dome non halogen bulb, as per the workshop manual, so wouldn’t have a H4 lens and think the lens pattern for UK is E11 not E2.

I want to put a Lucas one back in and was thinking that the originals had a round Lucas stamp in the middle as suggested by SNG Barrett( as in image). The mk2 brochure I think also shows this. Were they also domed or flat originally? Was the 340 different?

Closest I think I have found, which they might be, are the Lucas F700 type domed, which you can now get as halogen( as in image)

Anybody out there know the answer?

Thanks all

Hello Kris,

I can't claim to know the definitive answer but looking at my copy of 'Original Jaguar MK1/11 by Nigel Thorley shows the 340 as having domed headlights. MK1 and early MK11 had flat front lenses, and states that by the mid sixties they were sealed beam lamps, i.e. no seperate bulb and which are domed.

Personally I am fitting H4 halogens to my car as they are so much better and including a side light within the headlight.
