Fault code P2381-17

Hi My 2016 2 litre diesel was passed to my son coming up to 2 years ago. Shortly after he had it the engine warning light appeared although everything appeared to be operating properly. As the stop/start function hadn’t been working properly for a while due to the battery condition I advised that he changed the battery. Having done so the light disappeared for a couple of miles but then returned (it had intermittently gone off for short periods previously). So having established that it wasn’t the battery the car went to a Jaguar specialist where the fault code P2381-17 was read and after checking they replaced the EGR Valve pressure sensor. Unfortunately, once again the light reappeared within a couple of miles and has stayed on ever since but, as before, the car appears to operate quite normally. Any ideas?

EGR problems are common to all makes of diesel, especially if they are used extensively on local journeys. Having changed the EGR valve pressure sensor, it's possible the problem lies with the hoses (restricted/blocked) or with the EGR valve itself. Alternatively, a wiring/connector problem (e.g. corroded pins) could be responsible. Mike.

Hi Trevor.
I am sorry to hear about the issues with the EGR valve on your F-Pace that has now passed over to your son.

As it name suggests the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is woking in a difficult environment and can become sticky and/or as Mike explains the system can become blocked.

It is important that diesel engines are worked hard from time to time especially if short runs are involved, so that soot can be cleaned from the system by the heat from the engine exhaust. Despite this the system can still become blocked.

As an update on this problem I spoke to a Master Technician at Stratstone who without hesitation said “It’s water in the throttle body, the EGR sensor and the throttle body share a power circuit so although the fault code points to the sensor it is usually the throttle body”.

This obviously isn’t the first time he had encountered this problem!

As yet my son has not had chance to have the throttle body replaced so, as yet I don’t have conclusive proof but I’m prepared to think he knows what he’s talking about.
