Replacing a Rear parking sensor

Postby ParaHandy » Tue Aug 10, 2021 2:41 pm

Hi
My XKR MY2010 (coupe) was driven ever so gently into something immovable with the immediate result of causing the whole lot to fling the towel in; one out all out, which seems a bit much. There is a small dent about 2” below the left centre rear sensor. It’s quite difficult to see how that might be the cause but that is the visible and logical evidence.

My question is how best to get at it? The manual instructs me to remove the rear bumper cover which requires an awful lot of work by 2 people, with both wheels off, and from inspecting it, there isn’t any obvious route from inside the boot.

Anyone got any experience of doing this or idea of costs? Is the manual OTT and a shortcut magically appears?

Many thanks!
Douglas

Unfortunately, the only way is to remove the bumper. There is no workaround.

Indeed! Thanks.

When jag try to empty £700 out of my pocket I get a bit grumpy!

Is this part no the correct one JDE28658 or is it C2P20587? If anyone knows I’d be grateful.

Send me a pm with your VIN number and I will be able to give you what Jaguar says is the correct number. Mike.

As it occurred after a bump I assume it's not just the connector dislodged? Happened once to me.

When you say 'failed' what do you mean exactly? When it goes cold and wet all mine go erratic. I switch them off!

I've driven XJSs for the last 30 years, my current variant for the past 14 so never had the luxury/benefit of parking sensors. That said when I purchased my x150 the parking sensors seemed to work albeit intermittently, But I like the idea. I've plugged into a jag based obd2 and this reports rear right is not working. I will check the module which I believe is located in the right footwell when I get a moment, Yellow consul light intermittent and red light flashes occasionally. I'm reluctant to remove bumper valance so may just have to continue to do it the old school way. Just done 3700 mile plus in France Spain and Portugal without issue :D

All that said and whilst I know I will miss the quirks of my XJS having something a bit more up to date will hopefully help.

Happy Days

Nick,

Many of the systems disable the whole system if one sensor fails as it then can't be "trusted".

So, has your system been disabled? If not, I'd question if the sensor has failed?

Most of the JLR sensors of that era tick quietly when they are functioning. So try turning on the ignition, put the car in reverse and bend down and listen carefully at each rear sensor. If there is one that isn't ticking, then that's your problem one.

I don't know on the XK, but just maybe you can get to the plug and sensor attachment point by feeling inside the bumper (rather than completely removing it which is what I've now got to to do to my Range Rover to change the broken sensor I've recently identified!)

Cheers

Hi Paul

At the moment no rear sensor "clicking" so I will have a look at the module and clean it up if needed (when I'm able to get to it). That said it is my understanding that the bumper cover needs to be removed. I've had a look and absolutely no way to get up into be able to reach a sensor.

I'll keep working on it.

Many thanks

Help please - On the basis that no question is "stupid" I have the following. Trying to avoid being ham fisted. I want to have a look at the parking sensor module and have located the panel in the footwell it sits being but it's not immediately obvious how it is opened. I don't want to force it. Any obs greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The parking module is located in the LH footwell. To get to it: remove the bonnet release lever and ease up the forward edge of the scuff plate, carefully release the clips there. Next peel down the carpet and release the forward edge of the side trim panel. The trim panel can then be removed. Beware of damaging wiring and connectors during this process. Remove the 4 bolts holding the sub woofer cover and ease it aside. A couple more bolts hold the module itself in place. Mike.

Many thanks Mike - Greatly appreciated. I will get a manual at some point soon when I've worked out which is the best way to go. You might have gathered that I am new to the model :(

Thanks again

Not entirely sure if myth, but. Tried spraying WD40 on the sensor which kicked it into life albeit intermittently and with absolutely no reliability but the first time in months. I did manage to get my hand up inside the rear bumper around where the rear off-side sensor sits. Wire feels encrusted. I'll have a go at cleaning it off and a bit of wiggling. Absolutely no way of actually getting the sensor out though this route :o

It's an absolute design failure in my view to locate these sensors (prone to failure) such that a big lump of the car needs to be dismantled to access them. Out of curiosity I asked a Jaguar main dealer for a price. £700.00 ish to replace a £30.00 piece of kit.

Had another look (or rather feel) at this again today after carrying out some routine preventative maintenance. I have read and reread the workshop manual and am persuaded that the only way to do this job properly is to remove the bumper cover (mammoth) That said, my failed sensor is the rear right. I can actually feed my had up inside and get hold of the unit and tantalising close to being able to disconnect and withdraw the connector. But would I actually be able to get a replacement in situ (who knows).

I guess after some 25 plus years of XJS ownership with no such aids the thought of getting some parking assistance quite appeals. Oh well :x
