M.O..T

Postby Andy P » Fri Sep 15, 2023 3:23 pm

M.O.T. pass today.
No advisories thank goodness.
Suprised me what with the amount of potholes everywhere around my area :( .
It's difficult to avoid them all :) .
Needless to say I'm very happy :D .
Take care.

Well done, always a nervous time!

Many failures can easily be prevented such as inspecting tyres, bulbs, and the horn. Most of us on here get to know our cars inside out and know when something isn't quite right, whereas an average driver often has absolutely no idea of even basic checks.

Thanks Pop for the kind comment,
I know what you mean about the average driver.
I have tried to teach my own family the benefits of the easy things to check but it just falls on deaf ears :D
Take care.

Just returned from Canada, where they have no equivalent of the MOT, and no obligation on car owners to do anything to ensure cars are road legal. Amazing.

It varies by province, Andy. A number of provinces have things like annual emissions testing and it is likely this will become mandatory across the country in coming years. Other provinces have annual or 2-yearly safety inspections, whilst some provinces currently have nothing at all, as you discovered.

I guess that's the vagary of such a vast country with disaggregated administration and control. Maybe I can persuade Rishi to remove the ULEZ restrictions for people living in Kent?!

Cheers

Of course a number of other UK cities also have clean air zones as well. In fact, I expect this to roll out everywhere eventually.

Portsmouth, near me, has one although at the moment private cars are exempt. They are crafty though as the zone just about includes the entrance to the Isle of Wight ferry terminal so that non-exempt vehicles are caught.

Regarding London, I saw somewhere a chap who owns the largest Showman's Traction Engine you could imagine and burnt vast amounts of coal, had a nice letter from the Mayor thanking him for owning a vehicle that is exempt (Over 40 years old) and therefore helping to keep Londons air clean and sweet!

I do wonder how long over 40 year old vehicles will be exempt from road fund licence MOT and ULEZ. After all, it used to be 25 years for tax until it got extended.

Pop,

They'll probably take the German approach of restricting use. So our vehicles will stay exempt but only be allowed to drive in to cities on the 5th Monday of any month, or something similar!
