Wheel Studs

Postby rosemary » Tue Apr 04, 2023 8:25 pm

I was about to renew the rear brakes and the first thing obviously is jack the car up and remove the wheel. Had a bit of a job initially getting the parking brake off. I had gone on to You Tube to see about making sure the parking brake was off but critical procedures were mostly not gone in to and after much fiddling about I worked out how to get the parking to go to the off position with the engine shut down and stay off. The problem now happened, I started undoing the wheel nuts and one just wouldn't budge. I used a long bar on the socket and the result was the nut broke in half leaving half the stud still in place holding the wheel on. It had to be drilled out to get the wheel off leaving half the stud still in place. My question is are these wheel studs removable from the hub and how do you go about doing it.

Most wheel studs are a press in fit into the hub. To stop them turning when tightening up the wheel nut is a splined portion on the back of the stud.
To remove a stud a couple of taps with a 2lb mallet should knock it out.
No magic holding them in.

Thanks for your response, someone else told me the same thing but I wasn't sure. I've ordered a new stud and will have a go..

Well the new stud came and its too short, went back on-line (e-bay) and delved deeper into the site page
and it turns out this is not suitable for the XF. Went on to Jaguar Auto Reserve site and ordered a secondhand stud from an XF.Then
remembered I had a hud bearing kit still in the garage from my old S type, had a look, a couple of short taps and one of the studs came out and eureka its the right stud for the XF.
So I now I will have three studs, so, one is going to replace the stud from the Front bearing kit for the S Type which is actually the same as the the bearing kit for the XF luckily. I'll keep the short stud just for the hell of it, and replace the one in the bearing kit with the used one from auto reserve.

Well folks job done but my advice is don't do it if a stud breaks. The stud is knocked loose easy enough with a couple of taps with a club hammer as per getting one out of my S type bearing kit. Sell the car, unless you have a 36mm socket and a 2 ton hub puller handy to actually remove the old stud from the hub and fit the replacement. There is no clearance between the back of the Hub and the Drive Shaft housing to actually remove or refit a stud .

Nothing is simple anymore Dave.
There is always something that makes it much harder than it should be.
Well done for getting the job finished anyway.
Take care.
