Oil capacity between stick high and low marks

Postby MaxTheDog » Mon Jan 09, 2023 8:10 pm

Hi All,
Attempted a search but couldn’t find anything.
As per the title really. Mine needs topping up, the level is just a tad below halfway between the marks. Does anyone know what the capacity between the marks is? This is the first top up in about 4.5k miles. Also, any recommendations on oil for the next change. Currently mileage’s at 49.2k. Thanks.
Regards,
Michael.

Assuming you still have your 4.0 XK8 from model year 2000, you need to start with this TSB just to make sure you've got the right dipstick and which marks to use as Max and Min levels depending on VIN

http://www.jagrepair.com/images/TSB/TSB ... 0level.pdf

In my handbook, for a 4.2 engine, it points out that the hatched section (less than the Max to Min distance) equates to 1 litre of oil, then confusingly, it pictures the Max point as the upper hole in the d'stick, but in the text says the top of the hatching is the correct level :)

I found his extract from a 2000 handbook that seems a bit vague, but no sign of the supplement promised in the TSB

I hope you can extract something useful from all that :D

Hi Astromorg,
Many thanks for your reply. Yes I’ve still got the MY2k. My ‘stick doesn’t have the hatching it has two holes to mark the upper and lower levels as per your extract. So according to those it’s used about 600 ml in the last 4.5k miles. It’s due a service anyway as it’s 12 months since the head gasket and timing chains etc were done.
On a slightly different subject, at 49k miles would you change the ATF and filter while I’m changing the engine oil/filter etc?
Ret,
Michael.

Changing the gearbox oil and filter never does any harm as long as the job is done correctly and it may improve the quality of the gearchanges. If it is to last, the ZF gearbox definitely needs an oil and filter change at about 60K miles, give or take a few miles, so your car is approaching the appropriate time. However, if you are planning to do the task yourself, bear in mind that refilling the gearbox needs to be done carefully, using the correct expensive ZF fluid, with the engine running and the gearbox oil temperature no higher than 30 degs C. This is a messy task. Usually, without access to Jaguar diagnostics to read the gearbox oil temperature, to be certain you have the correct level, it's best to carry out the task once and let the car cool down overnight before repeating the filling/checking process again the next morning. Thanks Mike.
Sounds like I’ll leave that to my ‘Jagman’. :P
