Smoothness of auto gear change XK 5.0

Postby yeltneb » Tue Feb 22, 2022 1:14 pm

I've just bought a 2014 XK 5.0 . When in automatic mode there is slight, but annoying, stuttering when it changes up or down.
Having had four XK8's (all post-2002) the auto gear change was as smooth as silk on all of them.
Is this common on all XK 5.0's, or do I have a problem?
Many thanks, Howard Bentley

Hi Howard, you don't indicate the mileage on your XK, which could be relevant. The actual changes should be very smooth when on the move, but some cars do have a tendency to 'clunk' on selecting first gear, especially after standing, but this is nothing to be concerned about.

The gearbox is, of course a 'sealed for life' unit, but what that tends to mean is that it is sealed for the life of the warranty where Jaguar might be expected to do something about it if it goes wrong. Most mechanically minded experts would recommend a gearbox service / oil change, with the jury being out on just when that should be in terms of mileage and / or time interval.

Have a hunt around other elements of the Forum to read up on gearbox servicing, plus if you have a friendly mechanic with a code reader, get the car plugged in to see if there are any stored codes.

It may be something as simple as the car needs a bit of use to smooth out its driveline.
