Separating exhaust manifold from downpipe

Postby peterheywood52573 » Sat Jan 01, 2022 7:27 pm

I managed to remove the 2 x4-off nuts, attaching the downpipes to the manifolds. I thought I would have been able to just pull down on the downpipes and the exhaust would have been free of the engine. It seems to be stuck. ( I am in the process of removing the engine).

Maybe I should loosen / remove the rear exhaust mountings?

Hello Peter,

I would think that the pipes are just stuck in the manifold as they protrude some way in, i.e. the flange is not flat like many other makes. A stout screwdriver to lever the pipes out should free them? I'm assuming the normal Jaguar pipes with a flexible section just after the pipes go horizontal from the manifold which should allow som movement. Just be carefull with the flexibles if they look doubtful, in which case you may need to slacken the rear mountings as you suggest.

Thanks Alec,
Very useful, I am glad I asked. It is the standard set-up and I will be careful with the flexibles. There is not much room for a big car.

Finally released after a lot of release fluid and waggling. In the end I was able to hammer down via a long piece of wood, on the down-pipes. All very gentle .
