Faulty sensor perhaps?

Have you visually checked if the coolant level is low? There could be another leak somewhere.

It had crossed my mind & when I first checked the level did need topping up but since then it has been fine,,I have been told by a number of people that it needs a device plugged into the data point to clear it,hopefully I will get that sorted next week, cheers guys.

Interesting, the system should reset itself I would have thought once the level is ok, see what happens after it is cleared. If persists I would definitely suspect the sensor.

Finally got the car back to the garage yesterday & the light was reset via the data port so no more red light, happy days, got so used to checking the temperature gauge every five minutes though I'm finding it a hard habit to break!
Thanks for your replies guys

Good result, may be worth buying a cheap code reader that you could use to reset fault codes, after noting them down obviously!
Many available, just enter code reader into amazon.

Glad it got sorted!

For a number of years, I've always carried in my car a simple OBDII bluetooth plugin and I have the Torque Pro App on my phone. Total cost of those two is £10. I use them every single week to do favours for neighbours and friends, reading engine error codes, resetting EML etc. The App also has the ability to read most of the digital data fed back to the ecu such as lambda readings, oil pressure, engine temp readings, AFR reading etc etc.

So absolutely cheap as chips and invaluable. Every owner of a post-94 car should have something like this and clearly cost is not a restriction.

Cheers guys, but after 20+ years in a car plant, the last 10 using hand sets to check a couple of hundred cars' electrical systems a day(or night!) I would be pleased never to plug one in every again!
