Dear forum, has anyone fitted this conversion offered by SU? If so, can I ask what you did about an air filter arrangement (since the HD6 plenum doesn’t fit the HIF44’s).

Sorry, I meant to add, HIF 44 conversion on a 3.4l Mk2.
Re: HIF44 conversion
Hello Rick,
I have a similar problem coming up as I intend fitting HS 8 carburettors to my car. I intend to modify the original air intake from the air cleaner to match the new carburettors, it doesn't look too difficult. I have the equipment to do so but shouldn't be too expensive to farm out if any welding and machining is required, or make up a slim adapter plate? Depends on your facilities?

Re: HIF44 conversion
Hi Alec,
Thank you for responding. From what I can see it would require a good deal of modification to the standard plenum to accommodate the additional width between the HIF44 mounting bolts versus HD6’s. For me I see two options - either going to pancake filters or using the plenum from a 420. I know the latter option works but would mean adopting the associated cylindrical air filter housing which I am keen to avoid. I assume the HIF44 conversion is not a popular one!

Hello Rick,
I am not familiar with newer S.U.'s but thought the pitch of the carburettors would be the same, assuming using the original inlet manifold?
My basic idea for an adapter plate would be a piece of 8mm thick aluminium, attached with countersunk screws to the air inlet casting, with studs fitted to the plate to pick up on the carburettor flanges. Alternatively and probably better is to weld that plate to the inlet casting?
I'm not familiar with the 420 set up so cannot comment
Personally I don't like pancake filters as I believe they are not very effective and restictive also.
