XJ6 S1 exhaust mountings

My car has an older aftermarket stainless steel system, and in removing it as part of other work it seems there are no body mounting points to support either the centrre pipe or more crucially the intermediate boxes ahead of the rear suspension unit. Just the mountings on the suspension frame and behind the rear boxes.That's quite a lot of weight to hang off the front downward facing joint of the over axle pipes, but looking at the parts and service manuals thats all there is! The diagrams show straps that go around the intermediate boxes but their function is unclear.

And the problem I have of course is that it is difficult to persuade the rear pipe from the intermediate box to go far enough into the front of the over axle pipe to stay there while I line up the rest of the system!

The purpose of the original straps was to prevent resonances in the mild steel silencer boxes. It's a long time since I have seen any fitted to a car. They rusted along with the silencer boxes! Later cars made use of over-axle olive clamped joints rather than the sleeved variety. That makes the alignment task marginally easier but it's never simple. Mike.

Hi Mike I found that using an old fashioned exhaust clamp rather than one of the theoretically better single bolt types worked better on those joints. Still a bit worried about all that weight hanging off one downward facing joint.

One of the worst jobs is trying to replace the over-axle mounts with the exhaust system in place so I hope you checked them before hanging the new system! Mike.

Yes, one rubber bush was missing so I replaced that. Fortunately the mounting brackets were ok.
