Hi folks, over the last few weeks I've been loosing coolant which is getting gradually worse, no signs of leakage anywhere in the engine bay topping up every couple of days now and today noticed the engine getting lumpy on tick over so I'm suspecting head gaskets.
Anyone know the cost of getting this done to prepare me a shock I imagine.
Car is a 98 XJR by the way.
Head Gaskets replacement costs
Re: Head Gaskets replacement costs
Probably at least £2 plus VAT at an independent Jaguar repair facility.
Before going that route, you need to establish the cause of the leak by diligent diagnosis. Any decent Jaguar repair facility will be able to pressurize the cooling system and do a sniff test which samples the coolant system for combustion bi-product ingress.
After about 80k miles of use, thermostats get sluggish and that can greatly affect engine running. After that mileage, replace the stat as a matter of course as a precautionary measure. Use only a genuine part NOT any after market rendition.
Do you have water exiting the exhausts? Do you have coolant in the oil? Can you see a cream colour sludge within a rocker box or on the bottom of the oil filler cap? Do you have any coolant leaking onto the road? You need to address these items before tearing the engine to pieces.
Note well. The XJR and XKR have a valley pipe which runs from the rear of the OS cylinder head, through the engine valley to the thermostat and water pump at the front. With age and mileage, the front end of the pipe leaks, splits, cracks and rots. Eventually it blows! Leakage is the first sign of failure and should not be ignored. The front end of the pipe is completely inaccessible on an R unless the super-charger is removed. That can be a very difficult job. Don`t attempt removal yourself unless you are a highly experienced vehicle technician. It is a sod of a job. Check the front of the engine for leaks. Certainly coolant leaks impact on engine running.

Re: Head Gaskets replacement costs
Cheers Mike thanks for that reply , yes I have more diagnostics to do before deciding on head gasket failure , thanks for the pointers will certainly look into that, just wanted to get a heads up on the possible costs.
