It certainly should be stainless and from new!

I don`t know that Jaguar ever fitted mild steel systems to S-types. The trend with many manufacturers from around 1997 was to fit stainless as standard. Makes sense really.

Not so many after market exhaust bays around nowadays. Gone would appear to be the times when we were lucky to get a couple of years from a system.

How come my back boxes are going slightly rusty. Every now and then I give them a rub with wire wool and it more or less comes off. But you wouldn't think stainless steel would rust in the first place :?

As far as I know, these exhausts (common in the industry) are made from 304 grade stainless. This is less corrosion resistant than the higher grade 316 material. 304 is good enough for the general purpose but nowhere near as good as the more expensive 316 which is often used in a salt water marine situation where it can survive without any degradation.

I really like the S Type, my only minor gripe was that I thought the exhaust was too quiet.
I have just had one of these fitted:

Oh my.

Think AC Cobra, Dodge Viper etc.

I think that it will actually encourage me to drive slower to try and keep the noise down; environmentally friendly!
I am glad that I didn't go for the 4" tail pipes though.

My car a 2.7L Diesel 2005 bought in 2010 with 10,500 or so miles on the clock from a main dealer is somewhat worrying me now with plus 154,000 miles on the clock and nothing wrong with it after a troublesome early life, still with the original exhaust system. Had new front wheel bearings shortly after purchase, amazed the dealer didn't spot them at the time of sale, probably hoping I'd go somewhere else and have them looked at and not have them done under warranty. new injectors at 80k irritating miss fire , replacement gearbox at 83k which in fact was the origin of what was thought a miss fire, it took a technician from Germany to sort it after about 20 minutes driving it up a hill and back, went went straight home to Heathrow and Germany immediately after the test drive, had a phone call from someone at Jaguar HQ probably because I had mentioned the problem at a Car Show in the USA on a Jaguar Stand, I think , offering to buy the car back, new horn assembly at 89K, new brake booster at 95k, parking aid that has never worked, rusted windscreen washer pump pus a few other minor irritants, all in all an exciting time. But since then nothing much has gone wrong and although I have an XF now as well I'm attached to the S-Type regardless of the Ford connection which to be honest was beneficial to Jaguar's reliability reputation and it looks like a Jaguar! For a car worth £570 on WBAC
it still performs as it should and I prefer driving it to my XF with low profile tyre's and wheels that Pot Holes just love resulting in cracked rims.
