Hello Folks
I've scratched my head enough and come to the Forum for ideas.
Last year I had my usual annual service at my local main dealer, in the course of which they advised the rear pads and discs needed replacement. I agreed they do it whilst they had the car.
The car had done 89,000 miles at that time so I wasn't surprised, they've been replaced before at about 20k intervals the last being a couple of years ago. Since the replacement last year in March I've had the "Park Brake Fault " alarm come up on the dash occasionally. The brake itself is however working properly. Stopping the car and switching everything off then restarting clears the alarm. This happens on a random basis.
Any ideas
Dave

Re: Park Brake Fault
Hi Dave,
I have seen this problem on my XF. It seems to be a random glitch. The parking brake works fine even though a fault is being reported. I have never got to the bottom of the problem. I think it may be a timing issue between setting the parking brake and pressure on the brake pedal. It is after all a combination of these two things used to reset the problem. It is so infrequent and clearly a ‘false’ warning that I ignore it now. If it becomes persistent then I may worry a bit more! Oh the joys of XF ownership.

Re: Park Brake Fault
Hello Rod
Thanks, I am currently ignoring it as well. I have noticed that it comes on after or during light braking in a traffic jam for instance. The car is due it's annual service under the "plan" I have with the main dealer, now "Lookers JLR", in March, I will mention it to them and see what they say.
I am getting close, if not at the point already for a Cam Belt change so that comes first.

Hi Dave,
2020 will bring up 10 years for my XF so the Cam Belt change will be necessary maintenance for me too. Time not mileage.

Hello Folks
I put my isoft930 reader on the car today and got P1571, can anyone tell me what this is. The reader's database doesn't list it.
The Alert is very irritating in so far as it doesn't clear down to a small icon after a while thus blocking other information in the instrument window. The only way to clear it is to stop the car switch everything off and when it clears restart. Absolute rubbish Jaguar programming, my BMW Mini clears alerts to small icons sensibly.

Re: Park Brake Fault
Further thoughts ref Park Brake Fault.
Looking back at the history of my car I can see from the maintenance record, before I had the car, a replacement battery in 2012 following various faults being reported in the instrument panel. The car was barely 3 years old and I assume the battery was replaced under warranty.
Again in 2016 I had Park Brake Fault come up on a trip to Breda . The car had sat idle for a couple of days prior to this and the Alert reset after the first few miles following a re-start in a Motorway Services. I had the battery tested and it was losing charge quickly whilst the Alternator was not operational and with few accessories on. I replaced the battery and had no spurious alarms until now. That battery is more or less 4 years old.
I put the car on charge with my CTEK charger overnight and measured the Voltage immediately on disconnection it showed 12.8 Volts. I must admit I thought it would show a little more than this, the charger had reached it's "Maintenance Level". However as I watched the volt meter, it rapidly fell to 12.4 Volts and continued to go down to 12.2 Volts. This with the car simply unlocked and the boot open.
Just to confirm the Park Brake is working correctly and I see no reason for the Alert to activate. Can I assume the Alert is a result of a weak battery and history indicates a replacement is needed before more spurious alarms manifest themselves.

Re: Park Brake Fault
Hello Folks
Update.
Bought a new battery Bosch S5 100Ah (5 years warranty) from Tanya.co.uk. £119 next day free delivery, HP Postcode area. Made sure it was fully charged before fitting. No more alarms during a drive around. Put the 2016 Lion battery (3 years Warranty) back on for the day after recharging, got ABS Unavailable and Parking Brake Fault after driving about a mile out of the village. Checked battery voltage 12.3V. with engine off, car unlocked and boot open. New battery back on. A bit worn out, me that is!, these batteries are very heavy!!!!. Probably won't have the car in 5 years, so will not see how the warranty works if history repeats.

Re: Park Brake Fault
As we have said consistently for many, many years, battery condition is all. Poor, time expired battery platforms cause poor electronic performance. End of....You would n`t believe the number of groans I get each winter as a Forum Co-ordinator about electronic glitches. ABS, DSC, hand brake, restricted performance etc, etc ad nausiam! It goes on and on, year after year, decade after decade!!!!! Work on the basis a four year old battery is not going to perform as well as a new one. Its probably half way to the scrappy at that point. I see batteries as consumable, degradable items which will require regular replacement if you wish the vehicle to perform as it should.
If I had the desire to spend £100 every four years in the quest for reliability, I`d replace that battery as a matter of course. As I`m a tight wad, then like most people, I`ll probably wait for the thing to fail before stumping up any cash. That`s human nature and not every one has an index linked pension!

Hello Mike
Good to hear from you and my Pension is index linked!!!. Agree with your comments wholeheartedly ref Battery Condition. I've scratched my head many times throughout my Jaguar ownership over the past 20 years and so often it's boiled down to the Battery. Purchase the best but shop around for the right price is the way to go buying the cheapest is a money pit as you say. Note, and you've reminded me, DSC was the other fault triggered on my dash with the 4 year old battery back in.

Re: Park Brake Fault
A well known and classic case of a defecting battery, Dave. I used to get that as a regular occurrence with my old V8 S-type. It didn`t help by using the car for short runs in the evening with headlights always switched on. Several starts on a cold, wet, winters night with heated screens switched on and also the heated drivers seat, soon flattened the battery as my journeys were short and insufficient recharge from the alternator used to give the battery a very hard time. The car was kept in a boat yard car park and any 240v power supply was a quarter of a mile distant. That made battery conditioning a very difficult thing with the knock on effect that I`d have to do at least one half hour drive every two days just to keep on top of the issue. Then add the winter temperatures and lowered terminal voltages into the equation. During the winter, that car was always running on the bottom of the electronic efficiency curve. At one point I was down to replacing a battery every two years. Then I discovered the sence in fitting a decent premium grad Varta Blue. That certainly helped quite a bit.

Re: Park Brake Fault
Glad I found this post. I too have the parking brake fault warning very occasionally. Car is a 2011 automatic 3.0 Diesel with 72,500 miles on and still original battery, which was measuring 64% capacity last year. Time for a new one soon I think.
