Warrenty & Recovery coming to an end.

Postby atheda » Sun Jan 19, 2020 5:39 pm

Hello,

My XF will be coming up to it's 2nd anniversary in my hands. I bought it from a main dealer with a warrenty and recovery in the deal, these will expire then. Should I just look at renewing them with JLR or would some other supplier be better ? I must say my last JLR vehicle, a Land Rover Discovery, didn't have any of this stuff. I had it for 11 years and had to be recovered once at a cost of £100 and never any repairs to warrent a warranty claim.
Advice appreciated.
Thanks
David

I hear good things about warranty direct from friends, but no direct experience, definitely worth shopping around

Hi David, Shop around to get prices then sit down and have a good think. I think it depends on your attitude to risk. If you want a safety net for anything that goes wrong (and the warranty is comprehensive) then take the warranty. If you are prepared to take repair expenses as and when then don’t take a warranty. It’s a big insurance policy and personal choice. If I had taken out a warranty for my XF I would have been financially worse off over the four years of ownership. Even if I get a big hit in the near future I would still be ahead. Warranty companies only sell policies to make money.

I agree with Zennan. I would not buy any extended warranty after the experience I had with both a JLR warranty and then a Warranty Wise cover for my old X308, which was then just over 4 years old. The JLR cover was extremely expensive for 1 year and, unless they have since changed their tune, they wriggled out of paying up when I claimed for a sudden leaking thermostat housing to engine block gasket. JLR argued the gasket was a "consumable" (!) and even though the main dealer supported my claim JLR would not budge.

I knew that Warranty Wise did not pay main dealer labour rates, and I would have to pay the difference, but they would not pay out for a siezed drive shaft UJ, insisting it was "fair wear and tear". At the time complete drive shafts were not available as a spare, so the dealer had to strip and rebuild it with new bearings (they don't like that sort of work these days), so I ended up paying for the full whack mostly as labour anyway.
I now take a chance on any repair bills that may, or may not, come along.

Many thanks for your comments. I am inclined not to have a warranty (repair insurance !!) but will look into recovery insurance. I expect that I can put together a list of car recovery companies & keep in the car will be just as effective.

Thanks again

I personally just took out a three year warranty on the XFRS just purchased from the dealer, was 899 but includes full breakdown cover and cover some mot parts like wipers.

My thoughts was a 6 year old car that is high performance going to cost a lot if a major part goes bang, but with breakdown cover and some mot parts made a lot more sense.
