I've an intermittent Air suspension fault currently on my 2003 XJR, similar to KBS's thread:

So far I have had the system fully mechanically checked out (at the annual service). No leaks, no compressor or airbag faults, and ride height checked out.
Using a scan tool i was able to identify a C2302 level plausibility error. I cleared the code, but it returns. The fault shows the amber light and air suspension fault warning. In addition the suspension feels firmer and less compliant, I'm assuming that this is because the ASM is no longer actively controlling the ride height, and adopts a default or "safe" mode?
A stop and restart always clears the dash fault.
This week I had the car up on the two post lift at work. I checked the wiring and connection to the 4 ride height sensors on the suspension arms. No evidence of any damage. I took the 2 rear sensors out to examine them they seem fine, though offside had more play in the sensor, put some connector cleaner on and refitted. The suspension dropped to minimum height. I started up and the ride height quickly returned to normal and stayed there. No re-occurrence of the fault on the return home.
Unfortunately the problem has returned and is now occurring on every journey.
My feeling, based on the fact the ride height is always normal, is that it's likely one of the ride height or accelerometer sensors giving an implausible signal to the ASM, or the ASM itself.
- Is there a way to narrow down the fault to a particular sensor? - Does this require a full Jag spec diagnostic tool, or are there afternarket scan tools that would give that level of information? (I used an ICarsoft i930 to diagnose the C2302 fault).
Could it be damaging to the system to drive the car when the fault is on? does it put extra stress on the compressor or airbags in that mode?
Does anyone have any recommendations about where to get replacement sensors?
Is it worth disconnecting the battery or removing the ASM to give it a full reset?
I'm concerned about taking it to an independent specialist (I've not built up a relationship yet with any in my area), as the starting point is usually the compressor (which is expensive) and I beleive to be in good working order. Does anyone have any advice on this?
