Brake fluid

Postby sam011 » Thu Jul 11, 2019 8:03 pm

Hello all, I am just getting my 1968 s-type back on the road after a long layup and have two questions.
1. What brake and clutch fluid should I be using. I am So confused with do3, dot4, 5, 5.1???
2. My brake pedal is solid and will not move.
So any help and advice on the above would be most helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Hello Dave,

Dit 4 is the common one.
However it sounds as if it is more than just brake fluid you need. Firstly try disconnecting the brake line from the master cyinder (Put a lot of absorbent rags or such to absorb any brake fluid as it destroys paint. Gently see if the pedal now moves? If it does, reconnect and disconnect from the servo output line and again gently see if it moves. As a guess I would say the servo has seized?

I agree with Alec. In addition have you recommissioned the brakes themselves by ensuring that the pistons move etc? If they are seized then the pedal will be difficult to move but you should feel a bit of movement as hoses will expand a little.

Many thanks gents for your quick and informative responses, I will not be back in the garage for a few weeks unfortunately but will be going through this test as soon as possible, starting with the pistons, master cylinder, servo. Many thanks Dave.
