Air Flow Meter / Maf Sensor

It has been indicated to me by an independent Jaguar service centre that my air flow meter may need replacing - it was an advisory. The car is running OK but I can only assume that they may know something I don't. There are no codes showing on the diagnostic reader I have. Looking at a "You Tube" video regarding AIR FLOW METER / MAF SENSOR the guy is suggesting getting some Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner and spraying the sensor. On reading other forums, there seems to be two trains of thought on this, one not to do, the other to undertake. I would be interested to hear from members here for their thoughts. Also, I have not come across Mass Air Flow sensor Cleaner in the normal auto spares shops, but I have electrical spray cleaner. Will this do?

Hi Doug.
I can't see any reason why not to clean the MAF.
It does get gummed up with crud so does have an influence on the information it sends back to the ECU.
Spray 10 to 15 spurts of the mass air flower cleaner onto the wire. Don't scrub the parts; you may break the wire.
Allow the MAF sensor to dry completely before reinstalling it.
You can't use carburetor or brake cleaners on a MAF sensor, as the chemicals in those cleaners can damage the wire.
Not sure about electrical cleaner though.

When I cleaned mine I used this product:

MAF Cleaner

I've used switch cleaner on one of mine that dissolved the blackening of the wire
It was not WD40 but switch cleaner that does not have any lubricant in it from Maplins (RIP)

Radiospares does an equivalent. Or as Andy says get isopropyl alcohol from his link

I don't know what that MAF cleaner actually is but I see the can says: "restores power and performance".
