Calling all XJ-SC Cabriolet's

Now then Bleasie you seem a little rattled it seems that a lot of people are
still confused as to what a Cabriolet is So here is my description
if you own a XJ-SC Made between 1983 &1987 which is when the model was produced and it clearly has XJ-SC on the left side of the boot you will have a manual fold down roof on the rear section or a fixed hard top in place
(optional extra when new) with 2 removable panels at the front when these are removed and the hood is folded you are left with a roll over hoop not like the Convertible which as a power hood and is completely open when lowered We do know that variations between these dates do exist but the bulk of the 5013 cars made where 1983 to 1987 therefore chances of say
some claiming to have a 1990 cabriolet is impossible the full convertible with its power hood came out in 1988 Hope this as shed some light on the subject
also we do know lots of copies of the cabriolet where made that will only
be able to be determined genuine cabriolets against the cars vin number
if your thinking of buying a cabriolet and are unsure if its genuine or not
check the vin with Bleasie he will only be to happy to advise you as to to whether its one of the genuine 5013 cars made regards Bryan Thomas XJ-SC 3.6 841 BRY

Now now, Bleasie, a Celebration?

Everyone knows that Celebrations were only made in 95 and 96 and therefore can't be Cabriolets. Surely they must be Convertibles!

Bleasie,

I sense we all recognise that the Cabriolet / Convertible confusion is causing you some angst! Please don't let it get you down.

I do understand the frustration it's causing you - I live with the same problem on the XJS register where the majority of entries have some error - incorrect Vins, engine numbers, colours, paint codes, even registrations! Like me, I think you'll just have to learn to live with it, correcting errors as you find them and politely advising our members of their misunderstandings!

The Cabriolet / Convertible issue is not actually that surprising. Even during the production life of the cars, many publications referred to XJS Convertibles as "Cabriolets" reflecting the historical use of the name for luxury convertible cars. In places like Holland & Germany, it seemed particularly prevalent and is still used in lots of areas of the media, even when referring to XK8 convertibles!

So I can undestand why some XJS Convertible owners think they have a Cabriolet. Hopefully, you've been able to enlighten them! I also hope that any JEC member that has contacted you, you have requested them to enter their car on the XJS register. As a JEC register, we do want to ensure that we get all our members' cars in the various registers.

Re. your posts on C103 TJM & D260 GJD, both of these cars + their VINs are on the spreadsheet that I sent you on 10th November - lines 54 & 60 respectively. If there's any probs with their details, do please let me know. Tks

Cheers

Did you see last week's Classic Car Weekly? It's nice to see the confusion between convertibles and cabriolets isn't all one way, there were two cabs advertised as convertibles, a 3.6 and a V12!

Bleasie,
Great job you are doing with the register, don't think the cabs always get the recognition they deserve compared to the convertibles! Just a thought though, what are you going to do with your time when you have found them all?

I've just bought D943 UGP, A 1986 V12 cab in black. Bit tatty at the moment but appears solid.

A bit of a thread from the dead this one!

For newer members who are trying to figure out the references to bleasie, I believe those replies were moderated out some time ago.

Maybe it would be better to lock this thread and start a new cabriolet one? Just a suggestion.

Steve m,

As suggested, I've now locked this thread. And with your membership details now updated, your car details are now visible for other members to see.
