Bonnet open warning light

My 2009 XF has decided to show bonnet open warning light but bonnet is shut. Any suggestions as to what maybe causing this problem

Thats a new one on me but suggest you check the microswitch/sensor that detects whether the bonnet is closed or not, may be stuck or faulty and probably the cheapest place to start.

After that I would maybe give the technical experts, XJK (Gavin Jones) a call to see what they recommend you check next.

Let us know how you get on because this will surely come up again for others as time goes on..

This happened on my XF. You need to undo the little nut that holds the U shaped bracket and just extend it slightly. If it is not extended enough it does not contact with the microswitch which then tells the computer the bonnet is not closed when in fact it is.

Apologies for delay in replying. Have had same problem again but the screws either side of grill inside bonnet with rubber tops just needed turning anti clockwise and problem solved. Simple as that.

My warning light came on after I'd put 250 ml of oil in the car!
Could not get it to go out (no matter how hard I slammed the bonnet) and you can't lock the car if it thinks the bonnet is open.

Read through the below posts and tried Atlantean's advice first, as I am no mechanic and it sounded easy (in theory)
What I did
1) Loosened right hand (as you face car) C bracket 13mm spanner 2 bolts holding the bracket to the bonnet hood
2) Pushed 2 small cable ties behind the bracket and packing and re tightened the bolts

This took 2 minutes - in fact it took me longer than that to find a 13mm spanner (hadn't used one for years)

3) I then shut the bonnet, sat in my car and preyed to the motoring gods before pressing start button
To my amazement the fault was fixed - even after closing and opening the bonnet several more times to check.
So you literally need 2mm of packing and its fair to assume us bonnet slammers must bend the C bracket a fraction over time, just breaking the contact with the sensor.
