I personally am not too disappointed that the XJS is undervalued as helps keep the focus of ne'er-do-wells on other cars such as Ford Capris: a work colleague of mine recently had his Nissan Skyline taken from outside his house even though it had an alarm that detects the car being moved! Over a couple of years he had spent more than 20K and so it must have became attractive to thieves.
I appreciate my view on value will annoy some but as has been said before, as the bad ones disappear those remaining will ultimately increase in value although I do so worry about our current political drive to push ICE cars off the road, so the future is unclear. On this (and petrol stations!) I did recently write a post on Hydrogen - I then wrote to my local MP who took it to parliament but the reply amounted to making a point that battery technology is catching up i.e. they are not pushing hydrogen (already proven by the likes of BMW in the 90s) which tells me there is a hidden agenda. Sorry gone off on one but the recent publicity on the electric E-type drove me mad; why could they not have spent the money on modifying the petrol engine to run on Hydrogen which would create an appetite for others to follow and perhaps do the same for cars like the XJS

Back to the point of this post - I must confess I too never considered an XJS until my wife told me she liked them! So we decided that we would like to own one and not only did we find a green model (for me a Jag has to be green), it is a manual :). Again undervalued but this makes me smile as very few appreciate how special it is! The reality is that my car (ahem my wife's) is virtually irreplaceable as there are so few, so is a relief that currently she(the car) is not an Eleanor (Gone in 60 seconds)!

Not quite sure why you're looking down your nose at Ford Capri -- not my cup of tea either, but it's a pleasure to see one that owner has taken a pride in presenting. Often not a daily though. Subu's too do have their following, if you like that sort of thing. And yes scroats are around for all sorts of cars -- but not it seems for XJ8

Me? I'm looking forward to moving out of inner London. But where in UK is scroat free?

Tried an XJS once. Nice driving experience but being a bit rotund nowadays, felt like I was sitting in a bucket

I have a theory that it is all down to three things

1. Nostalgia. We like to try and recapture our youth - there were many more Escorts built than Jags - so the market for the Ford is bigger
2. Ready cash. The retired generation are relatively well off and have the money to spend.
3. The social side. More fun than a round of golf or game of bowls!

As nostalgia moves on to the next generation and because their financial retirement position will probably be less rosy, I suspect the demand for classic cars will diminish. Perhaps my children/grandchildren will collect old computers?!

Keepers get handed down to the next generation :D

Well - so I would like to think! I suspect the sad reality will be probably be that the XJ-S gets sold/scrapped at the same time I'm planted six foot under!!! "Vintage" game footage of Fortnight / Robux will probably be more prized and paid for via a crypto-currency than any of my cars.

Have you noticed recently the number of adverts with a classic car in them?! Hopefully sense will prevail and a way will be found to mix the old with the new and our hobby will prevail; I do think that clubs such as JEC can do more to encourage finding ways to allow ICE to compete with modern alternatives. If you consider the cost to the environment to replace all the current ICE cars with new models plus the elephant in the room of battery disposal, surely it is worth putting some time and investment in?

BTW - visited the Bicester scramble last Sunday where I saw the remastered Jensen Interceptor by JIA (Jensen International Automotive), similar idea to KWE for the XJS but even more expensive, but wow what a beautiful car, I so want one!

In today's Classic Car Weekly; have to say I've seen these type of stories regularly over the past 4 years or so...time will tell...

I'm sure that the only reason any XJSs remain is that owners were prepared to keep throwing money at them over the years. The ones not looked after are now long gone. Same for the Capri's mentioned. Hence those that remain are generally in sound condition and have a pampered existance.

One reason that prices hold well is that the XJS is generally mechanically repairable. I doubt many of the brand new cars on sale now will last more then 10 years due to all the electronics, airbags, touch screens and diesel particulate filter problems etc.

Totally agree Pop with especially your comment on the new stuff - everyone keeps banging on about being green and buying new cars but the truth is they are too complex and soon will become beyond economical repair, for some 10 years may even be too long!

Regarding the XJS, it is a complex car - the engines are a work of art but need skilled maintenance, the a/c on the older cars is rocket science to most but at least you can easily swap out components rather than repair if necessary; not so easy on a modern car - especially as the manufacturers make it difficult.

Nice to hear that pre-HE ones are desirable. This year I hope to get a quote to see how much my 1978 car would be to get back on the road. It's been in my garage for the last 27 years on jacks. Mileage is 24,000. Nothing obviously wrong with it visually. The bumpers were removed years ago in an exercise to put a different body pack on it instead. I have found the original bumpers in the roof so I want to put those back on.
It probably needs a respray as well.
It's a difficult decision to make about the cost of respray and recommission (engine could have seized etc.) compared to what the car would sell for - if indeed I wanted to sell it.
It would appear from this thread that prices are on the up - yippee!
