Alternative 17" tyres for 02 XK8

Postby gts » Sun Dec 16, 2018 11:52 am

Hi,

I want to replace the tyres on my 2002 XK8. They are the recommended Pirelli P Zero Asimmetrico 245/50 R17, on original 8jx17 "Lamina" wheels. However I cannot find them anywhere, and other tyres of the same size, such as Bridgestone Potenza, are run-flats, which I am told are not suitable. Is that true? Alternatively, can I fit tyres of another size, such as 235/50 R17 or 235/55 R17, where plenty are available? What is my best option? Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Be careful when straying away from the standard size tyres fitted by Jaguar. Your insurance company could take a dim view if anything were to happen. Legally, you have to fit tyres which at least meet the load and speed requirements specified by Jaguar. Typically, XK8s perform best on the brands Jaguar used, i.e. Dunlop, Pirelli and Continental. It's easier to change brands if you require 4 new tyres. Only changing 2 tyres can introduce odd steering effects with some brand mixtures. Mike.

Thank you very much Mike for your advice. I contacted Pirelli and they said they are out of stock for my tyres but should produce them in the new year, and hopefully be available in March. I guess I'll wait for them but if they are still unavailable, my local fitter said using 235/55R17 instead should be OK (I'm replacing all four tyres).

Happy Christmas!

I have exactly the same problem.... I guess now also waiting on Pirelli. You are right about runflats, which I found out the hard way.

Happy Easter!

Finally, the P Zeros are available and had them fitted two weeks ago. The ride feels much better now.

Using the tyre developed for the XK8 means the car will feel exactly as Jaguar intended it to be, an excellent grand tourer. Mike.
