Louder Exhaust

Postby jBlackwell » Thu Jul 21, 2011 10:22 am

I have finally just learnt that the very nice (noisey) exhuast on the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club Tools and Spares Shop advertised for the 4.2 S-Type, will actually fit a 3.0 V6 also. Just a little modifacation and it fits. By a little modifacation a do mean a little!!
Good news for all you S-Type owners who want to get the most out of your V6 Jaguar rumble.
Details can be given upon request, I will in time add them here so you can all see how it is done. :)

Physically, V6 and 4 litre V8 exhausts are the same dimensions.

Can you confirm, James, that the Club exhaust units will also fit the V8 4 Litre.

For those who are interested the JEC Tools and Spares offer a fabulous exhaust for S-Types. It really does release the "V" engine rumble. If you klike your car to sound like a "V" Engine should, I can strongly recommend this sytem.

Thanks for posting this James, they do indeed look interesting.

I must question your need to post the same content in 3 different sections, this is classed as multiple posting and leads to confusion, generally it is not accepted on most Boards and Forums, I would ask you kindly to delete the other two posts before folk start answering there too, I will edit this later to remove this comment, or Mike could edit it for me. Please don't take this the wrong way, I... like you, want this place to be successful, but you will drive folk away if it is not run in a proper manner.

Five years ago, this topic was rather more live than it is today.

To my knowledge all these exhausts were sold off. A call to Helen Hodgeson at JEC HQ would confirm.

There is no real issue getting a sports exhaust manufactured at a reasonable price. From first hand experience I can recommend the National franchise chain of Longlife Exhausts who operate from many locations across the UK. They will build you a system to your specification. Be aware that fitting a sports exhaust can change the character of a presently refined vehicle. At one time I had a Miltek modified S-type R system fitted to my V8 4 litre. Around town it was fun but on a long run, it could become tedious. If in doubt steer away from a full on loud system and just remove the resonators on the centre section and replace with straight pipes and an H or X-pipe arrangement to ensure cylinders enjoy a good scavenge flow. That makes a good compromise and gives the best of both Worlds.

Would anyone know where I could get a decent inexpensive exhaust for my 4.2V8R ? Or shall I just remove the centre boxes and fit straight pipes in place of them?

Many thanks.

My 04 XJR 4.2 has just that modification.

However, please note that within the standard mid resonator box located under the rear seats, there is an internal H-pipe arrangement within. (cross-over to help cylinder scavenging). This gets removed if you chop out that centre section and will need replacement in the new set up. My mod entailed fitting a purpose built X-pipe arrangement to keep exhaust balancing and to help exhaust gas flow. Longlife Exhausts at Carshalton in Surrey made my set up which included sports cats which again helped with un-blocking quite a constricted exhaust system.

The exhaust is a little louder without spoiling reasonable peace within the car. I once had a modified Miltek s-type R exhaust fitted to my 4 litre S-type. That was quite a bit louder and could be mentally wearing if doing several hours of driving in one day. Choose what you do with some care. More is not always good.

It would be best going down the custom build route, find out who is recommended in your area and have a chat with them re options to suit you.

Thanks for the advice gentlemen.

I think I might go down the route of making my own as I have up to 80mm pipe bender and tig etc. Will let you know how I get on.

Had stupid prices of around 500£ !! Just for centre section!!
