Gearbox

On the 2009 XF is the gearbox sealed maintenance free or can the oil level be checked and topped up.
The handbook is very vague on this question
Hoping to hear back.

I moved this from the XJS section to XF>Transmission in the hope of it standing a better chance of attracting the attention of the right people

Hi Andi
I asked the same question of my local dealer about my 2014 sportbrake, I was told Jaguar say sealed for life and good for 100,000 or more before any checks are needed, it's a bit like the no temperature gauge scenario on XF's, Jaguar say the warning system will tell you long before you have a problem.
Cheers

Ah yes! The old 'sealed for life' myth, made worse by being promoted by Jaguar themselves. That's because they want it to go beyond the normal warranty period without servicing. I believe the 2009 XF has the same gearbox as the X350 XJ (i.e. made by ZF) which is not recommended to go until 100,000 miles before attention: current wisdom is for an oil and filter change every 60,000 miles, 80,000 miles max.

BrianG, totally agree with those sentiments, if the 2009 XF 6 speed box is anything like the 2014 8 speed box it does more changes up and down than a brides nighty, making it do more work than is really needed. Only after a remap did my 8 speed change when it was supposed to. I wonder whether these claims are of course, just to keep pace with the competition and of course to make sure you have your gearbox oil replaced at the main dealer, at a premium price of course.
Cheers

I am also taking the pessimistic view that ‘sealed for life’ is a myth. When I purchased my XF I had the Gearbox Oil and Filters changed @ 52k.as a preventative maintenance service item. Also had the Diff oil changed.....

It's a myth alright. Euphemism for lie! More faults = more business ;-))
VW did this with their Aisin Warner Tiptronic boxes. Until VW USA spilt the beans by including a 60k ATF & Filter change into their service schedule listing <snigger>

I had both my XJs' ATF & Filter changed. The Sport's wasn't so bad (previous keeper an enthusiast) but no receipt in the file to show having been done. But I did see the Exec's old ATF. It'd never been changed to 103k -- it was black :-( I don't know what swarf had collected around the magnets or on the sump cover

Hello Folks
The question really is:- Why do Jaguar sell a Filter and Oil Maintenance Kit for a "sealed for life" gearbox ?. It speaks for itself. I had to have a new gearbox in my S-Type at 82,000miles and the XF isn't much different. My XF is going to take advantage of the "kit" shortly having reached 80,000 miles.

I’ve owned my XF for approximately a year and I am now close to the 80k mark and decided to get the gearbox service done.

My Jaguar specialist who conducted the work for me suggested that people were getting issues with gearboxes after only 5 years - not the lifetime claimed by Jaguar.

However, now I’ve had my gearbox tended too, I wonder how long I can go until another gearbox service. Any thoughts?
