HD6 Carbs - What Are They Worth

Postby shirelets » Fri Mar 16, 2018 10:55 am

Could anyone give me an idea of what I should ask for selling these carburettors? Have just stuck them on ebay with start price of £90, but suddenly realised some JEC members will have more idea of a price than my guess! Fully refurbished can fetch over £1000 when I had a look on the web - seems crazy money!

Here's a cut and paste of my ebay blurb:

Carburettor Assembly Jaguar Mk 2 3.4/3.8 etc: SU Thermo HD6 AUC992

Set of carburettors, electric solenoid choke, manifold and spacer gaskets believed complete, although I know nothing of their history.
Tags on bowl covers AUC992F and AUC992R (concours winner to have these still present!).
Internet search suggests from Jaguar Mk2 3.4 / 3.8, S type 3.8 or 340. Maybe also Mk 9.
Fairly sure Mk2, as they were in a box of miscellaneous spares bought for my own Mk2 - which being a 2.4 has Solex carbs so no point hanging on to the SU's.
Need stripping, cleaning and refurbishing - previous owner obviously not into show condition under the bonnet!

Thanks for any advice,

Hello Les,

from my S.U. manual, an AUC 992 f and R (Front and Rear) is from a 1960 to 1962 MK2 3.8 8 or 9:1 compression.
I really have little idea of their value especially as they need refurbishing. I would be astounded if even refurbished that £1000 would be paid. I could believe that for a triple 2" S.U. E Type set with manifold but not the Mk2 ones?

Carbs do not seem to fetch much on the auction sites as it is difficult to judge condition. The manifold and ancillaries are worth about the same as the carbs if Ok I see from advertised items.
You can get fully reconditioned triple sets for an E Type for about £600ish so I would think you may in the right ball park. Auction sites will tend to set the level by the bids received I would have thought if you specify the minimum you would accept.
Best of luck with the sale as it is good to keep items in circulation rather than dispose of them.

Thanks gents very much for replies so far.

My web search turfed up SU Carbs themselves advertising at £1100 + VAT and a US site (can't remember who) at $2100.

I came across that SU data table online which suggested the 3.8, but other sites suggested the wider range I mentioned in my spiel - maybe it's just the needle fitment that's different. Somebody will know for sure! I'm glad they have the AUC tags so buyers know the model exactly.

Think will leave ebay start price as is to see if any interest and also try Gumtree with a fixed price offers on £150 and see.

Hello Les,

the tags attached to the float cahamber identifies the carburettor and its specification, so a similar carburettor with a diffenernt needlse, for example, would have a differenr identification.

Was the price you quoted for a new set, as this would seem sensible, otherwise I feel well over the top.
