STOLEN: B123MWV series 3 XJ6 (cherry red)

Postby B123MWV » Fri Mar 31, 2017 4:58 pm

Hi There, Please help.
My series 3 was stolen last night (thursday 30th March) from Stoke Row garage nr Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire.
Their cameras saw someone approach the car at just after 11 and get in and drive away. They have the only key.
Can forum members keep an eye out, its cherry red, in decent nick (from a few paces away) with Biscuit leather interior.
Pepperpot wheels, mouldy backseat, cracked veneer on dash. 89k miles

thanks all

My commiserations.

Keep an eye on ebay and also on Trovit cars. Good places to look out for your cars reappearance.

I`ll put the word around down here in Portsmouth.

Suggest you contact all the local Jaguar independents locally and give Keith Parrington a ring at XJ Restorations. He is well connected and might hear something on the grape vine. Worth also contacting local specialist car emporiums and ask them to keep an ear out.

Very sorry to hear that. Let's hope you get it back in one piece and the lowlife who nicked it gets what he deserves.

Like Wise , Very sorry to hear of your loss.
A while ago you could not give Series XJ 's away, in recent times their value has shot up together with the fact that many spares are beginning to become impossible to obtain. Sad to say this vehicle may be broken for spares.

Should this be a warning to review the security of our cars. Well used Wilmot Breadon locks used on said cars are easily opened ! Perhaps now is the time to install a remote switch somewhere.

I have just purchased two Series Two front wings and Tintin bought a Series One wing. These were both purchased at Stoneleigh Autojumble on separate occasions and have absolutely no idea of their origin or history. Furthermore these were cash purchases with no sales invoice.
I am not suggesting for one moment that any dishonourable activity is conducted at Stoneleigh but simply highlighting how easy it could be for an innocent purchaser to buy stolen goods

Meanwhile, I shall keep my eyes open and spread the word.

I do feel for you, and hope you get it back. I assume the car was in the care of the garage you refer to for repair or service and was their responsibility at the time. Whilst owners look after their cars well, third parties may not - and I am always relieved when I get my cars back from a workshop in one piece, undamaged, and without additional high mileage on the clock!

Do let us know how it pans out in the end.

Thanks all.

To add insult to injury the bobby assigned to my case has done naff all about it over the weekend and/or monday and is now off until friday. so thats helpful... not even looking at it for a week essentially. So unless the ANPR pick it up (needle in a haystack) i think it will be in a lock-up being cannibalised as we speak...

FWIW: I agree with oldtimer - time to start safeguarding with in car steering locks or having a back-up ignition security solution, according to the garage the guy walked up to it and just 'got in' so the garage assumed id gone to pick it up (in the middle of the night)

sad times...

I wonder if you might have a claim against the garage for lack of due care of a customers car. It might be worth taking some advice. I`d expect any garage that I entrusted my P&J to lock it up in a secure workshop overnight.

I agree with Mike, but the first course of action must be a claim against your own policy and let your insurer chase the garage.

I wouldn't expect much enthusiasm from the police. Some years ago my Mk2 was broken into, damage done and gear taken. I reported it and when the police realised I had parked it on Reading University campus the words the officer actually used were "Well, what do you expect?" No action was ever taken - not even a dusting for finger prints.

Its a sad world we live in.

UPDATE:
call from Footman James underwriter (AEGEAS) to tell me they are having to look at my policy wording. The garage MOT'd the car Monday, it failed (brake pads and a seized caliper). They hadn't carried out the work when the car was stolen on Thursday.

Anyone have any experience of insurance between MOT failure to MOT completion? Obviously a grey area but I'll go apesh*t if im not covered for the couple of days it can take to put a 30 odd year old car through an MOT...

Cheers
Matt

What has that to do with the car being nicked whilst in the caring hands of a garage? Duty of care surely applies above anything else? FJ appear to be splitting hairs.

I think you need to speak to a Director of the Company. David Bond is MD. Kevin Askill is Client Director and Martyn Raybould is responsible for Club business and development. Personally, I would start with Martyn Raybould who was keen to promote his company attributes and service at the November 2015 AGM. The FJ site says that in the event of any dispute, then David Bond should be contacted. Go in with the hammer and make your position very clear. At the end of the day, if you get your claim paid out, the FJ will be pursuing the garage for lack of duty and care and seek recompense for the value of your claim.

I would have expected better than this from one of the Clubs leading insurance providers.

Had the previous MOT expired?

yep, it had expired. I was in the process of renewing. I guess the insurers stance is that in anticipation of failing an MOT we should allow plenty of time for any work (which is obviously an unknown amount before going through an MOT) to be done...
