Re: Keyfob wanted
Not sure about the XJ40 fob, but this is the procedure for Jaguar X300 (XJ6, XJ8 etc)
1. Open the boot lid and drivers door, and switch on the ignition. Press central locking switch (in the centre console) 5 times. The siren will chirp to indicate it has entered learning mode.
2. Press the lock button of the remote, the system will chirp to confirm it has received the remote.
3. To program further remotes, press the central locking switch once. The system will chirp twice for remote number two, then press the lock button of the remote as above.
4. Wait for 30 seconds for the system to close and chirp twice.
Jaguar X300 (Alternative Method)
Procedure
1. Open the boot lid and drivers door, and switch on the ignition. Press valet button (in the centre console) 5 times.
Hope this helps.

Re: Keyfob wanted
Rich,
I expect the XJ40 uses the same procedure as the XJS as it uses the same fob, you know ground valet switch 5 times in 5 seconds etc, enter programming mode etc etc

Re: Keyfob wanted
Thanks Guys for the replies.
I don't seem to have a valet switch - looks like it has been cannibalised by a previous owner - there is a gap where the switch should be. Bet that replacing this switch is going to involve a long search. The only other switch is the disable alarm switch. I do have a central locking switch in the centre console.
Paul - as you know, my XJ-S is an old skool V12. It has an after-market Gemini Acquila operating the central locking and alarm - so not familiar with the face-lift '90s Jaguar alarms.
Every day is school day
Cheers, Rich

Re: Keyfob wanted
Rich,
Most of the XJS (& perhaps 40s) don't actually have the valet switch, but the 2-wire plug is loose under the centre console. You remove the liner and find the wire.
As I said, I'm guessing XJ40 is the same as XJS. I'm sure Rob or one the 40 boys will be along soon to confirm.

Re: Keyfob wanted
On my Celebration XJS I found the whole switch under the centre console and the hole where it should go had a blanking plug in it. You never know - your 40 may be the same

Re: Keyfob wanted
Quick update on the XJ40 and my fob;
- Removed centre console and found plastic blanking plate underneath! It had dropped through
- Found plug for valet switch
Tried the following process to pair the Fob;
- Unlocked car with key
- Opened boot
- Opened drivers door
- inserted paper clip into valet plug ready for circuit forming
- Switched on ignition to position 2
- Made circuit and broke five times (I could hear a click noise each time I did this)
- Pressed button on fob
- Waited 30 secs (no chirp at all at this point)
- Switched off ignition
- Waited 30 secs
- Pressed button on fob - nothing....
Noted that the security system switch was in the Off position so switched on;
- Locked car (using key)
- 30 secs later alarm chirped
- Attempted to unlock with Fob (nothing)
- Unlocked car with key (only drivers door unlocked)
- Alarm started clicking and then went off
- Switched on ignition to position 2 to stop alarm
- Switched off security system switch
- Locked car using the key
Then tried the following process to pair the Fob;
- Unlocked car with key
- Opened boot
- Opened drivers door
- inserted paper clip into valet plug ready for circuit forming
- Switched the security switch on
- Switched on ignition to position 2
- Made circuit and broke five times (I could hear a click noise each time I did this)
- Pressed button on fob
- Waited 30 secs (no chirp at all at this point)
- Switched off ignition
- Waited 30 secs
- Pressed button on fob - nothing....
Quite frustrating....
I put a new battery in the fob yesterday so not sure what the issue could be.
Is the above process the correct pairing process or have I missed something? I have left the console out so can try any suggestions tomorrow afternoon (as long as its not raining!).
Cheers, Rich

Re: Keyfob wanted
Rich,
Don't use these X300 routines. Try using the xjs routine which uses the same fob.

Re: Keyfob wanted
Ok, so the only other XJS reference I could find are the steps below. I tried them and still no luck...
Remove the lid and tray from the center console, and see if you’ve got that
connector in there. It’s a small black connector with a yellow/white wire
and a black wire. Stick a paper clip in each of the 2 active holes. Shorting
the 2 wires is the equivalent of the XJ40 Security switch being in the OFF
position. An open circuit equals ON.
1.Security ON
2.Ignition ON (accessory)
3. Security OFF
4.Ignition OFF
5. Toggle security ON and OFF until you hear a series of shorts beeps begin
(approx 3 times), then leave it ON.
6. Press the button on one remote, then the other. You will hear a loud
confirmation beep after each press. Keep alternating like that until the
confirmation beeps stop. (Approx. three times, I believe.)
(At this point, I would get an error beep, similar to a door ajar warning,
when I attempted to lock and arm the car. The following steps appear to
complete the process.)
7. Security OFF
8. Press one remote. The doors will lock, but the alarm will not arm. Press
it again. They will unlock.
9. Repeat step 7 & 8 with the 2nd remote.
10. Security ON.
Giving this up as a bad job and will leave it to the garage to look at in a few months time. Frustrating....

Re: Keyfob wanted
Rich,
A couple of points. The procedure is roughly right but there are few omissions. Try this:
- Get in car, shut door.
- Turn on valet switch (or earth wires)
- Turn on Ignition
- Turn off valet switch (or earth wires)
- Turn off ignition
- Toggle the valet switch (or earth wires) 4 times within 5 seconds to get into programming mode.
- Press the remote a total of 5 times. So, if you have one transmitter, you press 5 times. If you have 2 transmitters, press one twice then immediately press the other 3 times.
- Remotes should now be programmed
Good luck
Paul
