Door card refurbishment best approach?

Postby Alank » Mon Nov 16, 2015 1:49 am

Hi Guys,
Pulled the door cards as was having a few challenges with door locks and windows. Found they're in a bad way caused by water, PO's ?, brute tinkering etc.. The cardboard is warped, torn, creased etc. What would be the beast way to refurbish these (would want to keep as much of the original trim as possible (don't like spending money, like originality). Maybe cut new boards from 4mm marine type ply and move trim over. Would this be really frowned upon by the 'powers' or should I source similar less than ideal IMHO cardboard ?

Thanks in advance, AK

AK

a traditional and well known issue with our cars ,

i understand you want/need to retain originality , however, new door cards can still be obtained in most colours, and are not too expensive, and they really lift the look of the interior when fitted, but again , it is a cost thing

no one will frown at all on whatever you decide on this site, its your car , the main thing is that its being cherished and being put back on the road, and thats always a good thing

what colour is your interior ?

most are available as brand new old stock on ebay

Hi AK - I have heard of people making up new backing boards for the door cards. I would think that there are a number of considerations. Firstly is the leather supple enough to come off and go back on without damage? Is its condition good enough to refurbish well? Can you get the handles, chrome, carpet etc off without damage? Some of the metal clips will be corroded and may break.
As far as using marine ply goes, are you sure that it goes in completely flat? I've a feeling that keeping the slight flexibility of the original material will help to pull all the edges in tight.

Hi BB and David,

Great replies.......... will mull it over and let you know what transpires. I haven't got it firing properly yet and made a right royal mess trying to get to the fuel filter in the swirl tank so plenty of other things to do.

Cheers, AK.

is that response to the £100 per door card ?

i didn't think it was that bad , there is a lot of work involved with doing it out of ply , hardboard would be better was thats what they are made of ,

make sure you take some pics and let us know how you get on

Welcome Alan, how about compiling yourself a list of non urgent parts and go to the Spring Spares day at Stoneleigh on 20 March 2016.

Use the time inbetween to concentrate on the urgent things and get the MOT passed. I found it's easy to get so bogged down with the many things that would be nice that the car never gets out on the road.

Hi Pop,
You're right of course, It's just that 'I want it all, and I want it now !' to quote Queen.

I thought of door cards because they're a mess and thought it was a job I could tick off. The ! because ebay had door cards at £400 with 31 watching. I'm a bit of an all or nothing sort of guy so it's essential the end result is A+ but I want to pay nothing for it

I'll make up a list, I'll be checking it twice, try not to get too discouraged by its size, and be sensible about the price. March gives me some time to save up the guineas to fritter awaaaay (doesn't quite scan right).

I'll let you into a secret, I haven't a clue about what I'm doing, and I'm trying to learn as I go (still my intention after buying the car 14 years ago).

Cheers, AK

Alan , i was where you are now, but with possibly a much worse car , lol

eight years later( yes, eight years ! ) i pulled this onto the drive , all the work was done by myself,

what i'm saying is , to keep costs down , take your time, and grab the bargains when you can once you make a needed and wanted list , the needed is the most important , wanted speaks for its self

good luck

Hi BB,
Sage advice indeed, and what a beautiful result. I've just started talks with Mr Hallett about a wish list.

And in my dreams (make that hallucinations) I can see me assembling a stablemate - 6 speed manual, v12, convertible in shiny, oh so shiny fire engine red with every bell and whistle and possibly the odd siren too. Oh and I'd like SS100 as well , I got an idea of how to get the ladders on that one.

aaannyy way back in the real world. Your right of course, I've only got the engine running lumpily, it's only moved 12 inches to unseize the brakes, and I'm marking a wiring diagram up with the circuits that work, or not, fixed the central locking and the electric windows, The hood did work but that's packed up again. I got fuel all over the boot floor because it was dark and clamped off the wrong pipe. It's a good job I laugh easily.
Cheers, AK
