abs tract and stability control lights on

Postby Loneranger » Sat Sep 05, 2015 11:02 am

I have a 1998 xk8 convertible and I have just had the abs, traction control and stability control lights come on. My local specialist tells me it is showing a pump errors message. He has suggested possibly a module error or could actually be the abs pump. I wondered if anyone he experienced the same. It is a new battery on car, I have disconnected and touched terminals to earth without success. The car only gets driven at weekends so had hoped it was just an error caused by voltage drop so before I start spending big money I was hoping someone could assist.

first and foremost

how good is your battery

this generation of jaguar car is very susceptible to low battery condition and will throw all sorts of codes due to a poor performing battery

if your battery is anything over six years old, and or fails a ' drop test ' then it needs changing, this is not checking the voltage so much as checking the amps loading requirement

this is probably your cheapest first fix as well, search the internet and forums for XJ8 or XK8 battery faults, you will soon discover this is a well known issue

good luck

If the battery checks out OK, the next most likely issue is a dry joint in the ABS module which often produces the symptoms you describe. Like any dry joint, it can be resoldered. However, the issue is made difficult by the fact that the module is a sealed one. It can be cut open, repaired and re-sealed by a competent technician but there is also a risk that cutting open the module will render it scrap. Consequently, don't expect someone who is willing to attempt a repair to be able to guarantee the module will survive surgery. David Marks has repaired several of these modules and would be a good person to approach to do such a job. Mike.

Hello Loneranger,
First the good news, I did the repair as described by Mike, and all my ABS and traction control problems went away.
The bad news, you will need to take a big brave pill before starting as the scope for wrecking the ABS module is high.
Get it right and you will save a considerable sum of money, get it wrong...

If you do have a go, the culprit with my ABS module was the two pins which connect (I think) to the external pump. With a magnifying glass it was easy to see the pins had all but come adrift from the circuit board.

Good luck,
Doug Barrass.

I have had these three messages come up as well and it gave an error code of C1095 " pump motor circuit failure"
What was your code??? :?: :?:
I also had not driven my car for some time so a good thrash around with some relatively hard braking and then stopped the engine and restarted and all the so called "faults" disappeared and then cleared the code. Also had the dreaded "restricted performance" and Cel problem several times... always cleared with a good drive around... These cars appear to be need to be driven regularly

I also have a new battery, not 12 months old yet and now keep it topped up with a trickle charger as recommended by many others on here! so NOT a battery fault on mine.

Interestingly, on the related thread next to this one Mike K (J44EAG) wrote about the battery terminal problem on his car, worth a check?

Loneranger, did you ever solve your problem at all?

Dragged my xk8 out of the garage, been off the road for last few months...and now I have the messages up again.
Will be putting it on the road in august so will see if they clear first but I suspect abs module problem.

Code reader tells me c1095 pump circuit failure.

Just wondered if you split the module and tried the repair.?

Hi Mike, hope its ok to contact you… i've had the same issue regarding electrical warnings coming up ob the dashboard for some time now but previously have gone out… this time however the ABS light has come on also. I therefore have done some preliminary work myself: namely - Checked battery and alternator, both are good and battery only 3 years old. Done resistance test on the ABS module plug base on a diagram posted on these forums, all sensors came up with same reading albeit at 1.1 k ohms… although I believe it should be nearer 2.2 k ohms. However, I have then had diagnosis equipment plugged in and the sensors appear ok, the code though that comes up is a C1095 pump motor error… so this is where i now presume I am in the land of the ABS module needing repairing or replacing. I am not confident enough tottery the desoldering route but wondered if this is something i could approach David Marks about? If so how would i contact him?

What would your advice be?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Andy,
It does indeed sound as though your car may have a pump module issue. You can contact David Marks via email at info@davidmarksgarages.co.uk. Please be aware that cutting open the pump module to effect a possible repair also carries a risk of damaging it irreparably. Then, you will be faced with finding a replacement module. As long as you understand that risk, it would be worth contacting David Marks to see if he can help you. Mike.

I was the originator of this post and obviously this will become more of an issue as cars get older.
My local specialist Alan Carr Jaguar Specialist in NE England recommended BBA Reman to repair.
He removed the unit sent it to BBA Reman who refurbed in a few days and sent back to Alan who refitted, did a brake fluid change (seemed silly not to when brakes need bleeding anyway and removes any moisture currently in brake fluid). Since then no issues at all.
The best part is BBA Reman have a lifetime guarantee on all their repairs.
I did ring them before work was started and found them to be very helpful, they only need the part number to confirm it could be repaired. Their price was I think £160 plus vat and carriage.A small price compared to a new unit. These units are not easy to source second hand and are build date / chassis number sensitive so I was and remain happy with the solution and price.

Here is their website: https://www.bba-reman.com/gb/index.aspx

BBA have always been serious players in the remanufacturing of electronic modules for many years. They have an enviable and vertually unsupassed reputation for supplying quality rebuilt parts at affordable prices. You really can`t do better. It is very reassuring to have these people around if it becomes impossible to source a good used replacements from the normal sources.

Thanks for you informative post. This will no doubt be well received by many who run cars that are electronicaly dependent.
