Thoughts for 2016

Postby BigCatXJS » Tue May 12, 2015 4:53 pm

Hi Folks,

I appreciate that 2016 is a way off BUT... I'm keen to see if we can have another go at organising an event (maybe more if the support is there!). Please take a look at the updated list below from 2013 for starters; all ideas and feedback welcomed!

Thanks, Rich

IWM Duxford
[Rich] Good suggestion from Pop Rivet :) Either a Sat or Sun run out... maybe?

Description
From the website;
We recommend you allow a full day to explore IWM Duxford and its collections. You can also relax in our on-site cafés, picnic areas and Activity Zone playground. There is ample free parking in front of the Visitor Centre. On air show days or special events, there are additional parking areas which are signposted. American Air museum opening 2016.

XJS (and Friends) Prayer and a Pint Jaunt
[Rich] Either a Sat or Sun run out... All models/enthusiasts welcome to be sure.

Description
An opportunity for a run out with some scenic pit stops and lunch at a famous renowned pub somewhere that serves real ale [NOTE: no drink driving! Swap to co-pilots for return drive ]. Meet at a central location (hotel).

Track/Airfield Day
[Rich] Anyone up for doing a track day? All models/enthusiasts welcome to be sure.

Description
Nothing competitive, but maybe an opportunity to undertake a sprint circuit and maybe also a straight line speed run. I was thinking of Bruntingthorpe...

Coventry Transport Museum (DONE - Jaguar Super Saturday annual event)

Description
If you’re looking for a fantastic FREE day out for all the family, you can’t beat Coventry Transport Museum. In the heart of Coventry city centre, this huge Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of British road transport, and a visit whisks you away into a world of stories of real people, real passions and real hope. You’ll discover the stories behind the people who made Coventry the centre of the world’s motor and cycle industries, and get up close and personal with the actual vehicles that defined some of history’s most important moments. The Museum is laid out as a journey through time – you’ll wander 19th Century streets and discover the first bicycles, carriages and cars, then explore the first car factories and gasp as you witness their wartime destruction in the Blitz Experience. The journey continues through the Boomtown, Spirit of Speed and Ghost Town galleries to bring you right up to the present day.A visit to the Museum brings you face to face with Royal cars, military vehicles, and cars that played vital parts in their drivers’ life stories – none more so than the current Land Speed Record holding vehicle, ThrustSSC, which lives at the Museum. Not only can you marvel at this spectacular piece of British engineering, you can experience for yourself what it’s like to travel through the sound barrier at over 760mph in the ThrustSSC Simulator.

Cotswold Motoring Museum at Bourton on the Water (DONE - Aug 2015 Drive and Dine)
[Rich] I would try to arrange for forum display parking on the museum drive. Bourton on the Water has a number of other non-motoring attractions that are well worth a visit whilst there. Could be tight on numbers here as there is very limited parking outside the museum. However, there is a public car park within easy walking distance as an alternative :)

Description
Located in the picturesque village of Bourton on the Water which makes a great day out with the kids or break in the Cotswolds, the Cotswold Motoring Museum is a truly fascinating journey through the 20th Century.

The Motoring Museum is overflowing with vintage car collections, classic cars and motorcycles, caravans, original enamel signs and in intriguing collection of motoring curiosities, it is a genuinely captivating experience and a fun day out at Bourton on the Water in the Cotswolds.

Ironbridge Gorge Museums
[Rich] 10 museums set in 6 miles sq'd of countryside. The more, the merrier - All models/enthusiasts welcome to be sure.

Description
This scenic area, often used by moviemakers because of its unspoiled, authentic 18th-century architecture, offers several museums that represent a different aspect of Britain's industrial heritage.
http://www.ironbridge.org.uk/

Haynes International Motor Museum
[Rich] I think that the X300 forum ran a visit to the Museum recently and also opened it up to a wider audience, so we could do the same if there is enough interest.

Description
The UK's largest exhibition of the greatest cars from around the world with over 400 amazing cars and bikes from nostalgic classics of the 50s and 60s glorious Bentleys and Rolls Royces to exciting super cars like the Jaguar XJ220.
http://www.haynesmotormuseum.com/

Hyper Transformations
[Rich] This visit could be combined with a visit to an attraction in Oxford afterwards.

Description
With years of experience in modifying, converting, repairing and restoring high performance and classic cars, and having spent several seasons competing on the race circuit, Paul Hands has developed the Hyper Transformation system as part of our complete Jaguar repair service in Oxford.

Some great venues and ideas here - keep up the impetus and let's hope for some good news for next year. (Is it too late for this year?).

Hi Paul,

Many thanks for the feedback. It's not too late for this year, but often folks diaries get booked-up quite a way in advance (sometimes without them knowing it by their better halves ).

If there is sufficient interest in taking part in a late "summer" event this year, then I'm happy to try and have a go at organising something. Otherwise, I wanted to get some feedback on my initial ideas and any other ideas folks might have that I can then write-up in an article and stick in the JEC magazine to stimulate further interest.

I've had feedback that a number of XJS folks have been tagging alone to XK8 events that would suggest;
- a lack of XJS specific events (although the monthly drive and dine attracts mostly XJS and their owners currently)
- a lack of awareness / willingness / ability to use the JEC website and XJS Bulletin Board coupled with a strong preference for the hard-copy magazine as a primary source for event information

Cheers, Rich

Hi Rich

there are some good ideas there in general , as well as specific XJS days,

I always think that a model specific days can put off other Jaguar enthusiast that have different models, and I personally feel that even if you don't own or drive a specific model that you would be made welcome to other events in what you do drive.. take our breakfast meetings on the last Saturday of each month , mainly pushed through the XJS forum , but ALL are invited, and the turnout has reflected this I hope,

one limiting factor can be distance, and there seem to be pockets of activity , that are sometimes too far for peeps to drive to and back in one day , so maybe the format can be sold to the regions and maybe someone will pick it up and run with it...

BB
Model specific meets do put people off some of the meets that I have seen listed, this has been my findings through my involvement with my own region. I know through following your threads that you have made members with other Jaguar models welcome, but not all do. I have spoken with PaulE with regards to starting a regular meet in our area for all Jaguar owners but to date the take up has been very slow. I am actively perusing this matter but to date I am having no joy. Maybe the time has come to just arrange something, put it on the forum and see who turns up. My problem is I am nor sure which part of the Board Index to put this on, as my research shows not all members look at the board or model forums.
Any thoughts or help that any members may be prepared to offer will be looked at to see if we can turn talk into action.

thanks Gordon

to be honest , its pretty much how i did it ,
' i will be there at this time, come and join me ' is how it started, and was happy to have a good group of lads turn up who have become regulars and friends,

leap of faith , nothing ventured nothing gained, and all that

best of luck with the first meet, and keep badgering people in the nicest way possible to turn up , lol

Hi Rich

Great ideas and well done!

Let's remember that XJS BB Events were originally started so that those XJS owners who posted here could meet and put a face to a name. I really don't think there an issue in organising XJS only events for model owners to enjoy. These are XJS BB events and organised as such. If other model owners wish to attend I've never turned them away and I'm sure you won't either, but......do XJS owners want to attend events organised on the XK8 BB for XK8 owners or other Bulletin Boards particularly? I think not and I'm sure they aren't offended by not being invited.
National events organised by the Club are a different matter
It would be great to see a programme of XJS events once again and I'm sure many new XJS BB members who haven't been on previous events would enjoy them.

Good Luck!

Any other ideas folks?

Probably over the next week or so I'll see about drafting the above ideas into a small article for the magazine forum pages and see what interest we get from that.

In the meantime, if folks have a preference on any of the above ideas, please share here or PM me.

Some great ideas there Rich,
Regards Track Day. May be worth having a chat with Terry Dye who organises our track days and race series. We are exploring ways of extending our reach for track days to members removing the emphasis on the race series. Could be worth a chat?

Great ideas keep them going.

Great ideas evolving. Many of the club regions arrange some fantastic smaller meetings, but often the information is late in appearing in the magazine or we only read the reports after the event. Not a critism but I often get the impression that some, not all, regions don't want 'outsiders'.

I may tag onto some local generic classic car meetings for 2016 as I enjoy seeing other marques. :D

Pop,

I also think there's an education issue necessary for the club PR management to encourage Regions to always use the Website, Bulletin Board and Diary to promote their events.
