2007 S-Type diesel prop shaft and differential

Postby AGS » Mon Mar 30, 2015 1:25 pm

Anybody any ideas where I might source these parts? It's for my fathers car which is turning out to be a bit of a pig in a poke I think! The existing diff was leaking when he bought it and he tried having a 2nd hand one fitted unsuccessfully and it now appears the prop shaft needs replaced which is what may have caused the issue with the diff. I'm not totally sure of the mileage but think it's around 90k.

I'm looking for any advice on where we may source reconditioned or second hand ones. Perhaps thinking of trying to find a whole S-Type that is being sold for spares.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Andrew

Eurojag who advertise in our magazine will almost certainly be able to help or a trawl on ebay etc. Eurojag may be able to advise best fitting procedure. Have you car Vin No to hand when you phone them to get the correct part for the car.

The prop is two piece with a central unit roughly under the back seat. A large round doughnut coupling joins the front end to the gearbox and I have myself had one of the doughnuts break up.

It is essential to get the prop onto the central mounting points correct. Martec who visits here frequently knows a bit about this problem. However he is struggling reading presently so it may be a short while until he can answer the question in print.

Hope that helps.

Another recommendation for Eurojag from me, my problem was I needed a Half Shaft and they happened to have a STR Half Shaft in stock, lucky for me as there are at least 3 different Half Shafts for S Types.

Hi Has anyone changed the center bearing on one of these prop shafts, if so what kind of a job is it to do. I've had a look under on my back and it looks like the exhaust will have to come off and it looks like there is a heat shield that has to come off as well.

I looked at this issue when I owned an S-type.

The complete new prop shaft was always the only Jaguar OE option unless you were able to find a specialist prop shaft rebuild company. One evening but several years ago, I noted that an after-market kit for the centre support mounting was listed on eBay. There was a rider on the listing saying the kit may or may not fit all variations of S-typs. Best advice, attempt to locate that eBay listing and contact the supplier prior to making any purchase.

As I understand the current situation, prop shaft and diff spares are getting very difficult to non existent. I heard through the grapevine that Bristol Transmissions had stopped re-manufacturing diffs due to non availability of suitable parts for S-type, X350 and XF models. Best advice then....find a good used diff and stick it in storage for a future date. One thing is certain. Jaguar OE parts supply gets very patchy once a model is twenty years old. That isn`t helpful to us.
