Rusty Wheel Arch - best solution

Actually Paul - there was no cutting - this is surface rust, so the solution was brushing out etc...I've heard before that the only proper solution is a cut out, but that has always seemed a little overkill for this.

Re: Rusty Wheel Arch - best solution
Oldtimer - my second XJS, this one was from Clarkes in Surrey, so they did it over a few days before I picked it up; that said, my understanding is that this loses effectiveness over time and by 5 years is pretty much gone...you'll read into my lines that my knowledge generally is limited about most things

Re: Rusty Wheel Arch - best solution
Richard,
As mentioned, I think rust bubbles on the outside of an XJS arch that didn't start from the inside is much less common than teh usual corrosion starting from the inner arch and then eating into both panels.
I agree that if the rust on an outer arch is ground back and doesn't pierce the surface then you wouldn't need to cut out the metal. However, proper prep and painting of the surface should thendefinitely stop it blistering again so quickly. You won't really know the problem now until the paint is taken off and examined. I still think a good repair and proper protection should last you 15 years!
