AJ6 Engine Rebuild old or buy Re-Con

Postby BlackJag » Sun Feb 11, 2007 6:03 am

Hi,

I have a 1989 3.6 Manual which has only done about 30,000 miles.
I have owned it for over 10 years and I am the 2nd owner. I managed to hole one of the pistons a few years ago and as a 'quick fix' put a used engine (with approx 100,000 miles) with the existing ancillaries. Unfortunately, it suffers from the blue puff of smoke at start-up but not noticeable at over-run. Although, oil pressure is a little on the low side so probably needs new rings..etc

My question is: Should I rebuild the old engine (it has 30,000 miles)? Note that I cannot do it myself as I don't have the space and probably not enough experience. And if so, can anyone recommend anywhere around the South West of England (incl Gloucestershire / Wiltshire)?

Or should I try and buy a new / recond motor and again any recommendations?

Many thanks.

In your situation, if you're looking at rebuilding an engine, I might consider getting hold of a 4 litre unit and dropping that in. I believe AJ6 engineering sells a unit to make it run correctly with the 3.6 engine management.

Just a thought?

CLEAN old '87 XJ-S 3.6 manual (for sale!)
If no-one buys it soon, its going on classic insurance!

Welcome to the XJS Forum.
You may wish to contact Swallows Jaguar in Somerset (M5 Jctn 22)
They have carried out my servicing and repairs for the last four years.
They advertise in the JEC Mag.
Be aware however that as you point out, I am probably talking B******s :x
BTW Unfortunately I don't think new piston rings will improve your oil pressure

DH Dove and Jon,

Thanks very much for your help.
Having looked at 'Swallows' web site, I think I will give them a go as the location is excellent for me.

Much appreciated.
