Faulty Indcator Flasher Unit

Postby jimthack180 » Sun Jan 07, 2007 3:31 pm

My indicators have suddenly packed up. They light up ok but don't flash. I assume the flasher unit needs replacing, but how big a job is this??

Hi jim

Do you mean that the indicator lights on the dashboard light up but the flashers themselves aren't working? or do you mean the other way round?

Hi Jon
Thanks for the response. Both the dashboard lights and all the external lights come on ok, they just don't flash. By the way, the car is a 1989 V12.

Cheers

Hi Jim,

It sounds like the flasher unit is the cause but it is an easy one to get at. Remove the access panel under the dash on the driver's side, the flasher unit is the relay looking lump above the fuse panel. The connector has four leads. It might just need unplugging and plugging a couple of times to clean the contacts; one of the leads is the ground connection, if this isn't making good contact it won't flash, just stay on solidly.

Glenn.

Thanks for the advice. I've only just had the time to sort it out, but on removing the flasher unit, I just cleaned the contacts with fine emery paper, worked the unit in and out a few times, and, hey presto, indicators working again! I wonder how much a Jag dealer would have charged me for this? Thanks to all for your help

That's probably the best repair you can do, sometimes a replacement part is lower quality than the original!
