Oil Pressure

Postby Stevepax » Thu Aug 29, 2013 10:27 pm

Getting to grips with the 3.6 XJ-SC. Not knowing to trust the gauges completely. The oil pressure guage shows Just over 50 when cold. Drops to about 40 when hot at idle and rises quickly to about 60 when on a run. Would this indication be acceptable on a 112000 miler ? Smokes a touch on hard acceleration but not excessive at the moment.
Cheers

spax,

The oil pressure on the 3.6 should be about 2.75 bar at 2000 rpm which is about 40lbs psi, so I think you're just fine. Also the gauges are never terribly accurate!

A touch of blue smoke on acceleration could be worn valve stem seals but I really wouldn't worry unduly unless it become excessive You might also find that it improves as you start to use the car for longer journeys more regularly.

Thank you, that helps a lot. It shows above 50 at 2000rpm so that's good news allowing for some inaccuracy on the guage.
I hope it will get better as the car gets used. Out early this morning and for the last two days the temp guage showed over N all the time. This morning rose to N and pretty much stayed there, so hopefully things are loosening up some.
Really enjoying it at the moment.
I remember it smoked a bit when Dad drove it, so I am sure its wear. But I won't touch it until it becomes a major issue. It starts/runs very smoothly at the moment.
What are thoughts on using injector cleaner in fuel now and again. Are there benefits or downsides ?

Injector cleaner tends to help if it is black smoke from the exhaust and it is not running rich. If it is running smoothly it sounds like either from inlet valve stems if on the over run or gummed up rings (if been standing for some time) or bore wear if when accelerating. Gummed rings may clear a bit and injector cleaner may help a bit on this.
Nothing better than use to keep all things going well.
