Forum Events for 2013 - Please READ and feedback

Postby BigCatXJS » Sun Nov 04, 2012 8:24 pm

Hi All,
I am keen to start thinking about forum events/visits for 2013. The purpose of this thread is to suggest a few ideas to get the ball rolling and collect any other ideas/feedback.

If any of the ideas below appear of interest, or you'd like to contribute other ideas, please reply to this thread. Once we've established a collection of ideas, I/we can create a separate thread for each individual idea and embellish with some more detail and potential dates etc.

Trust the above makes sense!

Cheers, Rich.

Option One
Heritage Motor Museum at Gaydon
[RICH] We visited Gaydon as a forum about four years ago. Well worth another visit now.

Description
Home to the world's largest collection of historic British cars the Heritage Motor Centre has over 180 vehicles on display (including part of the Jaguar Heritage collection) spanning the classic, vintage and veteran eras. With a selection of interactive exhibitions and outdoor activities, including the 4x4 Experience, Go-Karts and children's adventure playground, the museum is ideal for both families and enthusiasts alike. Situated in Gaydon, Warwickshire just off junction 12 of the M40.

Option Two
Coventry Transport Museum
[RICH] I would try to arrange for forum display parking on Millennium Court right outside the museum!

Description
If you’re looking for a fantastic FREE day out for all the family, you can’t beat Coventry Transport Museum. In the heart of Coventry city centre, this huge Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of British road transport, and a visit whisks you away into a world of stories of real people, real passions and real hope. You’ll discover the stories behind the people who made Coventry the centre of the world’s motor and cycle industries, and get up close and personal with the actual vehicles that defined some of history’s most important moments. The Museum is laid out as a journey through time – you’ll wander 19th Century streets and discover the first bicycles, carriages and cars, then explore the first car factories and gasp as you witness their wartime destruction in the Blitz Experience. The journey continues through the Boomtown, Spirit of Speed and Ghost Town galleries to bring you right up to the present day.A visit to the Museum brings you face to face with Royal cars, military vehicles, and cars that played vital parts in their drivers’ life stories – none more so than the current Land Speed Record holding vehicle, ThrustSSC, which lives at the Museum. Not only can you marvel at this spectacular piece of British engineering, you can experience for yourself what it’s like to travel through the sound barrier at over 760mph in the ThrustSSC Simulator.

Option Three
Cotswold Motoring Museum at Bourton on the Water
[RICH] I would try to arrange for forum display parking on the museum drive! Bourton on the Water has a number of other non-motoring attractions that are well worth a visit whilst there.

Description
Located in the picturesque village of Bourton on the Water which makes a great day out with the kids or break in the Cotswolds, the Cotswold Motoring Museum is a truly fascinating journey through the 20th Century.

The Motoring Museum is overflowing with vintage car collections, classic cars and motorcycles, caravans, original enamel signs and in intriguing collection of motoring curiosities, it is a genuinely captivating experience and a fun day out at Bourton on the Water in the Cotswolds.

Option Four
Ironbridge Gorge Museums
[RICH] I've never been, but BrianH has. 10 museums set in 6 miles sq'd of countryside.

Description
This scenic area, often used by moviemakers because of its unspoiled, authentic 18th-century architecture, offers several museums that represent a different aspect of Britain's industrial heritage.

Hi Rich

GREAT to see XJS BB events back on.
Any of 1,2 or 3 would be supported by me, 4 is a bit of a trek tho......
I hope that BB members will jump at the chance to get these events back on as they're great fun.
If Cotswold Motor Museum is happening would you like me to plan a road run for it, say 10-20 miles through the beautiful Cotswold countryside? One downside if display parking not possible, from memory there's no parking at the museum and B on the W gets packed solid in the summer so would suggest out of season visit, perhaps a season opener early in the year?

Hi Rich

All four of these ideas sound great. We would be willing for any. Just another idea,
have not been for many years. The Haynes international Motor Museum, Sparkford,Yeovil,
Somerset BA22 7LH www.haynesmotormuseum.co.uk. Lets hope we get a lot of interest
and get a group together for a day out. Where ever.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the feedback thus far!

Tony - many thanks for your kind offer. I'll definitely be taking you up on that. The driveway to the museum can take around 6 to 8 cars, but it is very tight! I agree that it can get very busy - so an early season visit might be in order.

Phil - the Haynes museum looks great. It's a bit of a trek for me but I'd probably make a weekend of it with the family if we did go for it.

Cheers, Rich.

If you might be tempted to a driving event rather than a museum visit, you would all be welcome to join Lincs North region for the Classic Car Drive - It day on April 21st 2013. I have planned the route for the last 3 years through the Lincs Wolds, a lovely , lightly trafficked, and little known area, to some country pile with good parking, a restaurant, and house visit available usually at reduced price or free for Nat. Trust. No age restrictions on cars which often excude later XJS's. Not been informed where to yet as this is arranged by the MG lot, so there are some about at the finish but the gaze can be averted by the over sensitive. Usually about 60 miles.

I have also got a drive out in mind for the 2014 Thoresby Hall Meet, so make a note. That will be 50 miles with plenty of good stops for nourishment en - route.

Our website at www.jec-lincsnorth.com is always worth a look if you are fancying something to do for a weekend in the season as we try to keep the cars active.

Thanks Paul, That's useful to know (especially the Thoresby Hall drive - though 2014 is still a way out). I'll probably be on the Jag World London to Brighton run on Drive It day. As this is more of a South East event (and knowing that a number of folks here on the Bulletin Board think I'm crazy heading for the the traffic congested South East for the weekend), I didn't think that it would be suitable as a Forum event (not to mention the cost...). Still - if anyone is partaking - I'll see you there :>)

Cheers, Rich.

Hi Rich, yep up for any or all of these. What about a potential visit to Hyper Engineering too? I tried to arrange a visit this year but the local farmer wasn't too keen with cars using his field for parking. Will need to work on Paul Hands a bit on that.

Regards,

Mike

Thanks Mike. Yes, a visit to Hyper-Engineering sounds like a good option too. I've never been before. Given its in the Oxford area, maybe there would be scope to combine with a run and perhaps a local attraction as well? Not sure how big Hyper is.

Cheers, Rich.

Hi Rich,

Gaydon is a good venue as parking is easy, but the Cov Motor Museum looks interesting, if you can the solve parking problem. What are the chances of being allowed to park outside?

I would go to the Haynes Museum too, as it would give the XJS a good run!

Cheers

Thanks Reg. Provided that there are no other major events on, then I'm fairly confident that we can get parked-up outside the museum on the square.

Cheers, Rich

Dear All,
Many thanks for the feedback. Please find below a consolidated list of current suggestions for Forum visits. I think the next step will be to start creating separate posts for each event with a working date and more details. I may well reach out to folks for help with organising!

Hope that you are all having a great Christmas; all the best for the New Year.

Rich.

Hyper Transformations
[RICH] A great idea from Mike. This visit could be combined with a visit to an attraction in Oxford afterwards.
