Wiring Diagram

Postby Buzetti » Sun May 13, 2012 4:06 pm

Hi, I need to sort out some wiring to my instruments/ instrument panel - but all I have is a tiny A4 size, black & white wiring diagram (Haynes) - I wondered if a decent size, colour wiring diagram may exist for the MK2 and if so, where to get a copy?

Also, I could really use the services of a good auto electrician (who covers Dorset) to have a look for me - any tips as to who might be able to help please?

Cheers

Hi Buzz

When I re-wired my car, I used the A4 diagram in the Jaguar book and took it up to A3 then printed off a few copies that I could scrible on. Worked out Ok, sorry can't help with the auto electrician.
bye-o

Hello Buzz,

the instrument panel should be fairly easy to work on, what specific problems do you have?

hi Buzetti,

the best set of wiring diagrams I've seen come from Coventry Auto Components and are available on ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380417274220? ... 1439.l2649

at £11, I thought they are excellent value as all the systems are broken down into individual diagrams and it's an A4 format. One of the best buys I've made so far.

I've blown each one up to A3 & plasticised them for using in the garage so the grubby fingerprints can be wiped off....

cheers, Jacko

Does this help? It's an S type but may assist:

Not sure where I got it - somewhere off the internet - it prints out nicely on A4:

Cheers for your replies.
I spotted this on Amazon.com (the USA site) which looks ideal.

I will order one and post if it is any good - I realise it will be USA biased, but imagine the diagram will be same left or right hand drive.

Hi, 'something and nothing' really, but annoying:

1. Missing panel lights - the three panel lights whic illuminate the centre switch legend are completely missing - the metal 'holders' are part of the rear of the panel but have no bulbs or wires!
2. The instrument lighting is generally variable/ poor - even on 'bright' not exactly bright....and some instruments are brighter than others
3. The speedo illumination is not working properly - it flickers on and off - and when the headlights are on, the main beam warning light flickers....no doubt some dodgy connections/ earths
4. The illumination behind the gearbox quadrant above the steering wheel only comes on with the sidelights - go onto main headlights and it goes out!

So, driving at night, a bit tricky to know how fast your are going and what gear is selected (I am exagerating, but you get my drift...)

I just want to get it all working per standatd spec.

So, to make it a bit easier, I thought I would get hold of a really good colour wiring diagram for starters

Yeh i see what you mean. They are all probably quite simple things to sort out though i would expect. Most of the time those lights going on and off is just the connection between the bulb holder where it pushes in to the panel holder. The E Types have exactly the same problem.

Hi, I have a small problem with my car wiring as I have been replacing some in the dashboard area, however when I came to reconnect the harness from the steering column to the one that sits behind the instrument binnacle I found that I have a surplus of purple, purple with black stripe, a brown and a black wires. I have looked at the wiring diagram in the service manual but really I need to know what wires are in each harness as I cannot find where each of these 'surplus' wires go.
Looking at the advice on the bulletin board I cannot see if this info exists although the diagram provided for the Jag 3.4 'S' by 'sweller' seems to address the issue for that model. I have searched the internet to no avail.
Can anyone advise/help.
Many thanks,
Paul

Hello Paul,

old car wiring and many owners can be a mess. However, purple is a permanent live, fed from the battery supplied fuse and typically feeds interior light, horn and headlamp flasher circuits (plus clock and cigar lighter), purple/black should be from the horn slip ring to the horns or the horn relay, if fitted, brown is a permanent live and for some reason, jaguar used a brown wire fed from a purple to power some of the indicator\headlamp flasher functions. and black is always an earth.

I would see what works first of all then see if the unconnected wires tie in using their colours.
E.g., if the purple/black is not connected check to see if there is any voltage on it, if so earthing it should blow the horn? if no voltage that could be the wire from the column horn slip ring and needs to be connected to a similarly coloured wire in the loom near the steering column?

Good luck and come back with what you find

Alec, thank you for the help. I will try that when it is a bit warmer or I feel like venturing into the garage again. I will advise how I get on.

Have made some progress with the wiring in the dashboard but does anyone know if the clock itself is seperately earthed as mine only seems to have a purple supply cable and appears to be insulated from the rev counter which itself does not seem to be earthed?
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Alec & Paul,
Just recently fitted new harness set(5) from Autosparks to my 66 s-type. About 90% complete but have not put in the steering column yet. My steering column has extra wiring as its Auto Box.
As the dash is still 'open' then I can give you info on wiring/colours etc. I have the wiring on the steering column labeled so I can give you info on that also. In addition I have a donor car with all wiring intact and that was a good reference as I refitted the new harness, a section at a time.

Autosparks have a link on their website for the British Standard Auto wiring colour code. This is helpful when used with the wiring diagram in the workshop manual. I won't be able to get back to my shed where I'm doing the restoration until Monday but if there is anything specific, I can help with please let me know

Anthony, thank you for you offer of help. I have managed to get most of it back together with the help from Alec and continuity tracing the wires. However I an still stuck with the clock, I have one wire to the back of it and no sign of any other and it appears to be isolated from the rev counter instrument binnacle which I am questining if that should be earthed as the wiring diagram shows the clock earthed. In addition I seem to have two green wires 'spare' which are both connected together in a double bullet connector which tends to indicate they should have another connection. These are in the loom that runs across the back of the instrument panels and are located directly behind the speedometer area.
Any help would be appreciated as I hope to box up the instruments soon as I get LED bulbs to change.
Regards,
Paul
