Daimler v8 250 Fuel line

Postby neilcampbell » Sat Jul 30, 2011 1:18 pm

Hello again,
It appears that the original metal petrol line is leaking. There are signs that the underseal above the back axle (where the pipe crosses from nearside to offside) is melting and I can only presume that the line is porous but without a smell of fuel or an obvious leak. I note that that section comes in one piece and goes over the axle and up between the rear neaside wing and the petrol tank. At the end of the line, where it goes through the body and into the pump, there is a nut. It is impossible to get a spanner onto that nut. Do I have to remove the petrol tank to replace that section of line. Secondly if I have to take off the tank would it benefit from resealing inside etc. or should I leave 'well alone'

Again many thanks for any advice.

Neil

Hi Neil

I'll have a look in the garage tomorrow to get the size, I cut the head off a spanner and welded it to a bar, then used mole grips to turn the spanner head. Other than that dropping the fuel tank is the other option.

Hi Neil

The tool I used was the head off a 9/16" A/F spanner and a bit of bar approx 15" long, see attached pic.

hello John, Many thanks, is the head at 90 degrees to the bar or is it slightly less.

Hello, still on the fuel line. I have now removed the rear piece of the fuel line. Can I replace it with copper pipe. I have heard mixed views on the subject.

Many thanks,

Neil

Hi Neil

Most of the fuel lines are are a copernol (think that's the spelling) which is a copper/steel alloy. Although I'm not sure if there is any legal reason for not using using copper, the only reason would be if used for high mileage, then it could work harden and fracture.
Perhaps some others can shed some light on the subject!

Hello Neil,

foe what it's worth, I've had copper fuel lines on my Triumph for about ten years with no problem and thats with fuel at 110 psi.. Copper doesn't like vibration so adequate clipping is necessary to avoid work hardening fractures.
