Anyone want a car?

Postby SWF » Sat Dec 24, 2005 8:37 pm

Martin, I don't know much about the theories or diagrams. I just go by experience. In my 35 years of Jaguar ownership which includes Mk2 2.4, 420 1968, Series 1,2,3 in 4.2 and 5.3 forms, V12 E-Type, AJ6, in 3.6, 4.0, AJ16 in 4.0 and V8 in 4.0......... and I can say that nothing compares to V8 4.0 in power or smoothness and economy. That's all I can say...

Anyone want a car?

Hey Sheepy good on yer m8 :-) , not bad choice of car, might as well as you got the dosh ain't you to blow ;-) (ASIC silicon chip designer for blue-chip company I would too! ), I was quite impressed when I had a german car a bm but there's something unique about a jag, there's a presence about a jag other cars don't have, (perhaps even the modern ford-mondeo 'jaguar' has it). Maybe it's the constant attention jags demand compared to german or japanese cars, or is it that every gangster in american movies drives one or maybe it's just it's in class of its own. Well if you decide to get another jag in the future, this list will still be here.

Thanks Mark, I just wish there was serious money to be made being an engineer!! Should really become a manager, they seem to do well regardless of the company's performance!!

I'll be back in a Jag at some stage, I've learnt too much to just throw it away for ever (although I won't miss the rust!!).

As for whether a V8 is better or worse than an "agricultural" straight six, well I'm not sure. Probably it's a matter of opinion, but I do think that the earlier 3.6l engines (well early efi ones) are actually better for spirited driving than the later 4.0l ones. The cams are different, and make the engine more responsive. I guess it all depends on what you want: smooth refined power wafting you effortlessly around, or foot-to-the-floor driving to the limit of the car/driver/law. I tend towards the latter (unless the wife is on board, when it it the former!!).

Now what we really need to discuss (or argue) is 6 versus 12. I have my opinions, what do the rest of you think?

Oh I dunno, being an engineer is great as long as you're keeping on top of the technology as it turns over, I find hi-tech engineering is quite a portable skill, always in demand and almost always good rake.

Well I think the difference between a 6 and a 12 is minimal when you compare to a V8 the way the Americans present it. I'd actually heard of someone over the other side of the pond putting a big V8 into a Jag, that's a bit like replacing your home hi-fi amplifier with an electric guitar amplifier and all the effects pedals. But then I get the idea that the fineness of these cars would be wasted on most Americans anyway :-) My opinion is as long as you don't notice something it's working well, if it had 3 cylinders and was as smooth as a six I'd be happy (don't think that'll ever happen), a straight 8 is too long in the bonnet, and a V8 seems to be too 'american' for me. A 5 cylinder is too weird. There was an excellent radio documentry program on the BBC about car engines in music a few weeks ago maybe they'll repeat it.

Well, the Jag has gone and I've got the Porsche. I'll delete my entry on the register later ;-)

First impressions of the beast are that she is in a different class to the Jag. More brutal, more hands-on. A car that needs driving rather than effortlessly conveying you from A to B. The power available is phenomenal, she's a five speed manual, and even in the dry you can spin the wheels in third and fourth gear! And the noise? Loud enough to make small boys cheer (and my neighbours groan).

I'll be back in an XJS at some stage, but for now, I'm off to enjoy my Porsche.

So long, and thanks for all the rust!
