X type 2.0 litre engine knocking
Moderators:Dave Eynon, steveisleofwight
From start up I'm getting a loud knocking noise. Droped sump off, found no. 5 big end gone, so have replaced bearings on no. 5 cylinder but noise still persists. Think knocking noise coming from top of engine and thinking it's still coming from no. 5 cyclinder. Any suggestions, thoughts, comments, help available please. I'm not in the motor trade but a keen car enthusiast just trying to keep my wifes car running!
Re: X type 2.0 litre engine knocking
The v6 engine in all capacities is similar in many respects to the unit used in the S-type.
If regular oil changing has not been carried out, the unit becomes a prime candidate for oil starvation caused by general sludge and or molecular oil breakdown. Lubrication properties rapidly diminish with broken down lubricant leading to rapid wear of component parts. Refer my article on the subject in (as I remember, Nov I0 JEC magazine)
From what you are suggesting, only one bearing has been replaced, presumably without the crank being removed from the car, being reground to the next available undersize bearing set (if available, which I doubt) or checks being carried out to establish satisfactory oil pressure and general internal engine cleanliness and satisfactory mechanical condition or integrity.
In my experience, replacing just one bearing would be seldom successful and less than satisfactory as a long term option. Advanced wear will no doubt now be general within engine components and the engine will probably require a prohibitively expensive and complete strip to make reliable again. That sounds as if it is the case with your engine, which I suspect may have an oil feed issue. I have come across one V6 that picked up and rotated a shell bearing through I80degrees, the cause being oil starvation. Net result, a wrecked crankshaft and therefore an engine that was reduced to spares and scrap.
Rather than expend further time and heavy expenditure on this obviously well worn unit, I would cut my losses and obtain a secondhand unit from a reputable Jaguar breaker. On ebay, you will find secondhand engines ranging from around £300-£800, some with a short guarantee.
There are several breakers to be found in the magazine pages, all with a reputation to protect. Many of us have used Eurojag as a reliable source of parts and in my experience I have found their service excellent. My opinion is that an engine change will give you the fastest and most hassle free method of dealing with your problem. Few people in the trade would bother with the aggravation and high costs of tinkering in the hope that a silk purse may be made from a sows ear.
That is my best advice on the matter.

Thanks for reply as it confirms what i was thinking as did not want to spend on this engine. I only replaced no5 cylinder bearing as wanted to check if there was any other probems before going down the full strip down and replace way.
