starting problem

Postby stuartie148 » Sun Mar 14, 2010 6:44 pm

I have a 1995 xj6 sport 3.2 - Am experiencing a starting problem that i suspect is the crankshaft sensor however I would like to test it first.Does anyone know if I can buy a diagnostic tool for the car(and if the car is OBDII compliant) and if so where it plugs in.
Also any further ideas on what the problem might be would be appreciated - when i first bought the car last month it started immediately but it now takes 3-4 seconds of cranking for it to start.
One day recently though it started 4 or 5 times first go but it's back to 3-4 seconds again. it happens whether the engine is hot or cold.
Thanks
Stuart

Usual test for crank position sensor would be to watch the rev counter needle move upon cranking. It should move to around 150rpm. If it doesn't move the cps is dead.
OBDII port is just forward of where your left knee will rest. A very good diagnostic tool is the Autoenginuity tool - which I have  It's a comprehensive, albeit fairly expensive piece of kit, but, there are other simpler devices on the market if all you want to do is read codes. You need to be careful though. I'm not sure that some of these readers will give the correct codes as different manufacturers used different codes for the same thing/problem. Petrol cars in Europe had to start using the same generic codes since 2001. Diesels from 2004.

I would also get the fuel pressure checked, the pressure relief valve may have failed, allowing the pressure to drop away while the car has stood

Thanks Rob, yes that makes a lot of sense - looks like an involved job to replace it but i'm thinking more and more that it's fuel pressure
Thanks Again

You might find these OBD11 fault code links handy. Download for future reference.
