My Jaguar (Alpine) 6-CD changer flags a E01 code. I referred to the handbook which says : faulty CD changer, and the cure is : see Jaguar Dealer.Very informative indeed... I did a seach on the Internet and found various possible causes : microswich, gearing... I dismantled the changer and found nothing obviously wrong. I dusted it with an aerosol and refitted everything, hoping that something would happen. But it did not. Same code flagging, the cartidge, once inserted, is stuck as before in the changer. Is there any testing which could be carried on the DIN connector ?
I suspect the dealer would not care for a 17 years old changer - or would charge me the price of a new unit to have it fixed.
I might try a used one (from Grublogger for instance, but I would like to make sure that the changer is faulty. The radio works perfectly though.

there are two things that fail with the changers, the laser and the loading motor, sounds like your loading motor has failed
the unit is an Alpine branded jaguar, here in Scotland we have one guy that will repair them, but I have now given up as the cost is too much, all spares are bought in Euros so you can guess what has happened to the sterling price, its about 120.00 for laser now and 80.00 for a loading motor, secondhand units are avilable circa 100.00 I have some here 100% good, or you could look for the cheaper Alpine branded unit a CHSM 630
