Gearbox spring mount

Postby smiffy » Fri Aug 14, 2009 9:07 am

Hi folks
I replaced the bush and spring seat on the gearbox (rear engine) mount of my 1966 MOD this week. I found that the spring retainer was different to what is shown in most Mk2 manuals, having no bracket to bolt to the gearbox case. Instead, the spring retainer is fitted directly to a protrusion from the bottom of the gearbox. I could not find a way of detaching the spring retainer from the gearbox, so had to get the channel plate off by using a trolley jack and short piece of 2" pipe pressing on the bottom of the channel plate to decompress the spring. Refitting, of course, used the reverse procedure, jacking the spring and channel plate back up into position.
Has anyone come across this type of gearbox mount before, and know how to remove it from the gearbox case? The spring is the shorter of the two available lengths - is this correct?
Best wishes, David

Hi David,

I came across a photo of my engine and gearbox (MOD) yesterday and I have the same gearbox mounting, I think this screws into the gearbox casing.

I replaced my old 1961 moss box with the later full synchro box and overdrive and fitted the shorter spring to suit.

Thanks Brian
It looks as though it ought to screw out, but I just wanted to be sure as there are several stripped or non-standard bolts on my car (the engine sump drain plug is a 3/4" BSF setscrew!). The trolley jack trick worked a treat though.
Best wishes, David
