intermittent gearbox fault indication & limp home mode

Postby Ianblair » Mon May 10, 2010 9:02 pm

Hi,

2000my automatic 101,000 miles covered. Recent intermittent "gearbox fault" indication on display panel. When drive selected with fault indication showing selector goes in with a "thump" and could hardly move forward on a slight incline.
When car started in neutral, fault not apparent. Gearbox oil and filter changed by DM few thousand miles ago.Happened for the first time a few days ago fault indication cleared after a restart and then drove 150 miles trouble free. Any advice would be appreciated. If gearbox on way to a write off any suggestions on where to get rid of a lovely Jaguar Sovereign
(in all other respects) faulty jaguar.

regards

Ian

Hmmm.......Sounds to me like the gearbox is most likely going "terminal".
Before you try and sell it you may like to consider a ZF factory recon box.
Chris Forbes at CFS Motors (near Coventry) can probably fit one for you for around £1500 all in.
Then you get to keep the car !
If this option appeals CFS contact details are in the "Recommended Suppliers Directory" .......link on the Member Zone Homepage.

Hi Ian
I'm glad the "gremlin" has gone back to sleep, but this is not the first time that those very symptoms,at that kind of mileage, has been the warning bell for imminent gearbox failure.
I do not wish to depress you,but I would keep a few bob in the piggybank if I were you, just in case !....that is, if you want to keep the car.
Gearbox failure is very common in the X308,at around 80K plus,(sometimes less) but at least these days we do not have to pay "main stealer" prices to get our beloved cars back on the road.
If the worst happens, Chris will look after you,and lend you a car to use while he fixes yours, if he can.
Take care
David

For those who dont live in the Coventry area if you check your Reccomended Suppliers list for a specialist in your area then quote the average price you can get the job done elsewhere im sure they will come to doing a deal for you...if anyone has the job done please let us know ....the price paid, the quality of the job,and your satiafaction level please......for those in the West Yorkshire area i know West Riding Jaguar in Mirfield do the job for round about the £1,500 as an exchange unit including fitting .........call Dave Bye first and then pre book......
Joe.

Postby Ianblair » Sun Jun 20, 2010 3:47 pm

Hi again,

Several other "fault indications" ABS, etc. also started to appear intermittently.

I have changed the battery (old one at least 5 years old) symptoms now gone and car appears to run a lot smoother.

Ian
A weak battery is the first thing to look for when electrical faults "intermittent and various" appear and you have solved those problems on your car...well done sir !
Fingers crossed for the gearbox !

David

i would still have an eye on the box at 101K miles, it's done it's time, a fluid and filter change would be the order of the day, and see what the oil looks like when it comes out, check for metallic particles in the old oil

Oil & filter changed by DM at about 98K miles.

Hi,

Now March 2012 and GEARBOX still behaving itself.

I now believe that I had two faults at the same time.

1 Faulty battery.

2 Gearbox problem.

I also now beieve that the gearbox fault was due to a dirty rotary gearbox switch as the problem was showing up on switch on and not in gear. Fault cleared by several selections through the gearbox from Park to 4th with ignition on only, ie engine not started, appears to have cleared the fault by cleaning the switch contacts by use (car had been stored over winter and not used)

As I said previously I have had no problems since original post.

regards

Ian

Can anyone tell me if I can swap a 3.2 Litre V8 auto box with a 4.0 Litre V8 auto box and vise versa?

to my knowledge the same ZF five speed auto gearbox was fitted to all the "normally aspirated"
cars .....3.2 and 4.0 litre alike.
the supercharged versions were fitted with five speed Mercedes Gearbox.
