My past cars

Postby joejag308 » Tue Aug 11, 2009 11:53 am

A good cross section of makes and models there.....but the main thing is everyone likes the 308 as their best buy..........my list was to do with my past business so its not a list i would have chosen as a private car, from Ford Granadas, And going back to the old Ford Corsair,Cortina, to the Vauxhall Victor and Cresta and Cavalier......then even the Morris Oxford Austin Cambridge ......leading into the Nissan ranges.
Until the Leeds City Council made it compulsory to use the Black Cab first in the seventies when we campaigned to have it changed for a Ford granada Taxi pack which Ford produced for us and then on to the Austin 1800 (the old Land crab) these were very successful as taxis but all were compulsory vehicles by Leeds City Council, until they came with a government order for compulsory Black Cabs again. These were a different animal to the previous ones having a Nissan diesel engine and a change of body shape...but costing approx £30,000 so they were supposed to last for at least 8 years before compulsory change over.
We once again campaigned against this expense and were allowed the custom built Ford Galaxies and Peugeot purpose built Taxi packs .......evidently now the Taxi Trade in leeds submit all sorts of people carriers costing i dont know how much apiece but they still have to be measured and approved......all in a period of my 43 years in the Public (hackney carriage) taxi trade..........since retiring i have owned 2 Jaguars well one Jaguar XJ40 and my now vehicle the Daimler Super V 8 the one which i wont ever sell........the 40 was a really good car too for nine years....but this Daimler is my passion........oh and i have just bought my wife a great little car quite a surprising car which for the reason it was produced is top notch......its a Honda Jazz 2006 model.....so now im happy i wont have to buy any more cars.....unless my secret passion to restore a Daimler Dart comes along........Joe

998cc Mini
1798cc MGB GT
1275 Mini
998cc Mini
1798cc MGB Roadster
3239cc Jaguar Sovereign (X300)
3996cc Jaguar Sovereign (X308)

I'd never thought of listing them but now i've done it I realise just how many cars i've had by the age of 25!

Patriotism has always guided my purchases so i've been sweeping rust off my Dad's drive all my brief driving life. I've loved every one of these cars which each had fantastic qualities and some significant drawbacks too.

Just out of curiosity, how many people started with a reliable 6 cylinder Jag and moved 'up' to a V8 knowing it was going to be a gamble?

Right, from memory and in chronological order (not as I owned them)

From 1981 to 1996
1973 Vauxhall Viva "estate"
1979 Rover SD1 V8 - Midas Gold
1980 Rover SD1 V8S - Black
1982 Rover SD1 2300 - Red
1983 Rover SD1 V8SE - Silver
1983 Rover SD1 Vanden Plas - Midas Gold
(spot a trend here yet?)

big gap from 1996 to 2003 as I had the use of works vehicles and did not need my own, but from 2004:

1987 Jaguar XJ40 Red
1998 Toyota Corolla Diesel (White automatic Japanese import)
1999 Jaguar XJ8 - Black (present car)

and despite her recent problems I still say the XJ8 is a keeper and I am already spending money on it to keep it going again and once mechanically sorted its getting a full oven respray 8)

Here goes my list, nearly in order, missed some out somewhere but it starts in 1959

Austin Ruby 7 Used 1933
Austin A40 Used
Ford Corsair V4 New
Ford Anglia Van New
Austin 1100 Used
Chevrolet Belair Used
Ford Escort New
Austin Princess New
Ford Thunderbird Used
Lincoln Continental Used
Ford Cortina Estate New
Ford Mondeo New
Mercedes 4.2 S Class New
Mercedes 380 SL Used
Porsche 911 3.0 Carrera Used
Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Used
Mercedes E Class New
Mercedes 4.3 S Class New
Landrover Freelander 1.8 New
Landrover Freelander 2.0 New
Citroen C4 New
Landrover Defender 90 Used
Jaguar XJ8 Sovereign 2001 Used

There was only two cars I made money on the Austin Ruby 7 bought for £10 in 1959, it broke down with a broken half shaft, I sold it to my mate for £12. 10s 25% profit. The other car was Porsche Carrera 911 3.0 1977, I crashed it on the A1 a right off, I paid £10,000 for got £10,000 back off the insurance company, bought the car back off them for £2500 and stripped it down and sold off all the parts for £8500, that made me think about importing them from Germany and breaking them up for spares, but alas did not go down the road because of other commitments.
