Hi ,
Apologies if this seems obvious, but I don't want to damage anything due to ignorance.
I read in one of the previous threads that the XJR model does in fact have a dip stick for transmission fluid. I believe I have have seen this to the rear of the engine, but how does one remove it. It doesn't seem to want to draw out as the norm. or does it unscrew? The design of it does look as if a diagnostic plug in could be attached, or am I barking up the wrong tree. Do I just use a bit more brute force?
Thanks
Mike

Transmission Dipstick
Mike.........i have one at the rear of my engine, but like you i have never had cause to remove it so i dont actually know if its a straight pull out or an intricate method..........im in for service Monday so i will enquire....Joe
Mike,
most probably you have found the dipstick tube - unfortunately there is no actual dipstick provided. The thing on top of the tube is a tamper-proof plug(which reads "MB Workshop only",btw). However, can't tell how to properly remove it as in my car the "lock" was already broken(maybe because of brute force). The plug stays on nicely even w/o the lock. Anyways, you can buy the appropriate dipstick from JEC to get you going...
NOTE - this information applies only to XJR with the Mercyless-Benz gearbox.
Cheers,

1999 XJR - 7" LP, Quaife ATB etc.
Thanks Joe & Ari for the replies.
You are correct Ari, it does state "MB Workshop only"" on the top. Mmmmm good job I didn't try and force it.
In view of what you both have said I think I will leave it well alone. It is due to go in for a service shortly so I'll trust it to them to check things are okay.
Thanks again chaps.

there is a bit of a mixup of info here, not all wrong, and not all right
the XJR ( supercharged ) has a different gearbox, being a Mercedes unit , this unit does not come as standard with a dipstick , BUT does have the capacity to accept a genuine Jaguar dipstick , this is available from a dealership, and comes in around £28 , and fits into the tube you have identified
normally aspirated 4lts jags do not have this feature, as the gearbox is different.....
so , yes it can be used as a dipstick, and some do use it as a fillpoint, but its slow and can be messey...
hope this helps
