XK8 'chirruping' noise

Postby stewarthurst » Tue Mar 25, 2008 12:58 pm

Hi everyone,

Had my 2004 XK8 convertible (in midnight black ) for just over a year now, and like all of you , I just love it. However in the past few weeks it has developed this strange 'chirruping' noise ( sorry I can't think of a better way of describing it ! ) when I fire it up. It only lasts for 1 or 2 minutes , then disappears. I'm worried it might be something serious , but it seems odd that the noise goes away as the car warms up.

Any ideas gratefully received.

I've been told that it is some sort of accessory belt, and nothing to worry about, although I'm sure there are better qualified people on this site who can confirm this.

Thanks for that D. I'm beginnig to feel slightly more reassured. I wondered myself if it might be some kind of belt issue. I'll wait to see if anyone else can shed some more light .

Noises are always particularly difficult to diagnose, especially when you haven't heard them! However, as D Doran says, belts are one favourite on start-up. It might be worth checking their condition to ensure that none of them is about to break up. Alternators and water/steering pumps can also be noisy when placed under the heavy initial current load/cold start conditions. Mike.

Sorry for the delay in acknowledging Mike , but I've been away. Many thanks for the advice which I'm now following up.

I have a similar noise I would describe it as a light metalish fluttering, quite musical, on stating up and again it goes away, not that one would hear it enclosed in the car and at higher speeds. I think it is louder on my car as it is an XKR with bonnet vents which allows the noise to escape.

My garage will look for it on my service in 4 weeks time. Will keep forum informed.

Hi, My car has developed this now - I was told that it is a "known" issue and there is an upgraded belt that will cure the noise - has anyone done this?

Thanks, Derek

Hi Derek,

Sorry I have been slow in picking up on this, but I was advised by my trusted Jaguar service man, Simon March ( York ) that, before asking him to incur expense on my behalf, I should first of all give the belt a light rub over along it's length with a piece of emery cloth. I did that and I haven't heard a peep from it since !

I have heard that the variable valve timing units ( on the ends of the cam shafts) can make odd sounds at start up that disappear when the engine starts to warm up. this does not (from what I have heard) indicate a looming problem - just one of these car's quirks. Note the XKR does not have VVT.

I was told it was a belt issue, so I'll try the emery cloth (thanks for the tip Stewart) - I'll let you know if it works.

Top tip this - I used a bit of wet and dry on the belt and it's been fine since.

You can buy a can of aerosol belt dressing as an alternative.
